This recently opened museum is the vision of Dr. D Veerendra Heggade, an ardent car enthusiast who has meticulously curated each vintage vehicle over the last 50 years. A Grand Entrance Upon entering, visitors are welcomed by a pristine black 1962 Standard Herald. Once a familiar sight on Indian roads, this car has become rare due to the unavailability of spare parts and dwindling customers. This initial display sets the stage for a nostalgic journey through the rich history of automobiles. In Kannada, "Payana" translates to "journey," and the museum lives up to its name. For the First Time, Sikkim’s Sanglaphu Cho Lake Opens Its Gates to Visitors!

The serene waters of Sanglaphu Cho Lake, nestled in Sikkim's Mangan district, made its sacred debut as it opened its arms to tourists for the very first time. However, this opening was done with a solemn understanding of the lake's religious importance, stressing the importance of respectful behavior from tourists. Sanglaphu Cho, lovingly dubbed the "Great Lake" by locals, holds a revered place in the hearts of the community, who have long worshipped its tranquil waters. Situated at a breathtaking altitude of 5,080 meters (16,670 feet), approximately 5 kilometers from Yumesamdong, also known as Zero Point, near Lachung, this natural wonder exudes an aura of sanctity. The inauguration ceremony, steeped in tradition and spirituality, was graced by a prayer conducted by the venerable monks of Samten Choling Monastery in Lachung. Pune's Timeless Treasure: Aga Khan Palace - Witness to History, Symbol of Heritage

The Aga Khan Palace in Pune is a magnificent testament to history, heritage, and architecture, with a legacy spanning over 125 years. It ranks among the most important sites in India's contemporary history due to its part in the nation's independence movement. In the past, Mahatma Gandhi and other notable figures from the freedom movement were housed in the palace as a prison. It is currently the Gandhi National Memorial Society's headquarters and one of Pune's top tourist destinations. Architecture of Aga Khan Palace: Situated on an expansive campus, the palace is renowned for its exquisite architecture in the Islamic style. Wide, well-kept lawns adorn the 19 acres of land on which it sits. The main building has five enormous halls and is situated on seven acres. The Italian-style arches are one of the palace's most distinctive architectural elements. The entire building is surrounded by a broad corridor that is 2.5 meters wide.The palace has three stories, with the ground floor occupying 1756 square meters. The palace's first floor is 1080 square meters in size, while the second floor is 445 square meters in size. Pune's Aga Khan Palace: At Present Today, one of Pune's most important historical sites is the Aga Khan Palace, which honors Gandhiji and his ideas. Within the palace grounds are the samadhis (tombs) of Mahadevbhai Desai and Kasturba Gandhi. Mahatma Gandhi's ashes are kept in a samadhi that is dedicated to him. In addition, a museum with an extensive collection of Gandhiji-related artifacts is housed in the palace. This contains images, photos, and personal belongings like clothes, cutlery, slippers, and a letter he wrote following the passing of his secretary. India has always been a land of rich cultural heritage, and the Veerbhadra Lepakshi Temple at Anantapur in Andhra Pradesh is a true marvel of Indian architecture and a stunning example of the Vijayanagara Empire's artistic prowess. The temple, dedicated to Lord Veerabhadra, is a sight to behold. Carved out of rock, the temple features timeless art such as beautiful frescoes and murals. Built on a rocky hill, the temple is also inspired by its surroundings, giving it a unique and breathtaking appearance. This temple has a rich history, as per the Puranas, the Veerabhadra temple was built by the sage Agastya. The temple houses many important deities such as Lord Shiva, Vishnu, Lakshmi, and Nandi, among others. It is also believed that the brave Pakshi Jatayu fell at this spot after his battle with Ravana to rescue Mata Sita, and Lord Rama said to the brave bird “Le Pakshi” — ‘rise, bird’ in Telugu. The temple also boasts of a footprint that is believed to be of Mata Sita. One of the most intriguing aspects of this temple is the hanging pillar. The pillar, which appears to be hanging in the air, is a stunning tribute to the engineering genius of ancient and medieval India’s temple builders. The initial targets of these vehicle emissions are the vegetation along the roadsides and highways. Here is a quick overview of vehicle emissions' effects on plants. Conversely, there has also been discussion on roadside plants' potential benefits in mitigating the negative impacts of vehicle emissions. There have also been theories on how plants may function as bioindicators of air pollution. One of the main concerns has been highlighted regarding the inadequate investigation of the nanocarbon particle element of vehicular pollution and their interactions with roadside plants, and more specifically with roadside crops. Transportation needs have grown as a result of urbanization, industrialization, and a rise in different economic activities to fulfill the wants of this population that is growing at an exponential rate. This, according to the researchers, is because shrubs and trees provide a lot of surface area for tiny particles to stick to, which effectively traps pollutants and keeps them from escaping into the surrounding region. The thoughtful placement of vegetation in conjunction with this natural filtering mechanism may provide a practical response to the urgent problem of increased pollution levels in the vicinity of roads. But Roby Greenwald, the study's author, is keen to warn against thinking that lush roads would solve every problem relating to automobile emissions. Although it greatly lowers particle air pollution, it does not sufficiently address greenhouse gas emissions like carbon dioxide and ozone pollution, which are contributing to the planet's catastrophic overheating. "We should plant more trees along roadways because they provide benefits that go beyond aesthetics," Greenwald explains. "But I don't want to give anyone the impression that we can solve all of the problems associated with motor vehicle emissions simply by planting trees." Assam's Moidams Make History as First Northeast Cultural Site on UNESCO List

Assam’s ancient "Moidams" mound-burial system of the Ahom dynasty achieved a historic milestone on Friday as it became the first cultural site from the Northeast to be added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. The announcement came during the 46th session of the World Heritage Committee, held in New Delhi, where UNESCO specialists reviewed and approved a list of proposed sites. (Source: Google Images ) Ahom kings and queens were buried in mounds at the Charaideo Moidams, a mound burial system in the state of Assam. They were constructed by covering a hollow vault with earth, stone, or bricks. According to a representative of ICOMOS, the World Heritage Committee's advisory organization, the selected site has 90 monuments of various sizes that were constructed over 600 years. It also includes other cultural elements including ceremonial routes and pools of water. "The Moidams are an exceptional example of an Ahom necropolis that represents funeral traditions and associated beliefs in a tangible way," they said. Following their migration from China, the Ahom clan established their capital in various locations within the Brahmaputra River Valley between the 12th and 18th centuries, as stated on the website of the U.N. Cultural Agency. Their initial capital, Charaideo (meaning "a dazzling city above the mountain" in their tongue), was founded in the Patkai highlands of eastern India. The burial spot the clan constructed was regarded as the most hallowed location for the royals' deceased souls, despite the fact that they traveled across cities. Experts compare the shrines to the Chinese royal tombs and the Egyptian pharaohs' pyramids, arguing that they demonstrate the skill and architectural design of Assamese masons. According to UNESCO, this location contains the highest concentration of these vaulted mound burials and captures the hills' carved topography. Despite obstacles from early 20th-century treasure seekers, the Archaeological Survey of India and the Assam State Department of Archaeology have worked together to restore and preserve the integrity of Choraideo. Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah to Consider Making Tulu the State's Second Language

In a significant development, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has expressed his willingness to address the demands of the people from coastal Karnataka to recognize Tulu as the second language of the state. During the inauguration of the Bengaluru Kambala Samithi event, Siddaramaiah commended the efforts of the Samithi in bringing the traditional buffalo race, Kambala, to Bengaluru. Taking a dig at former Kannada and culture minister Sunil Kumar, the CM highlighted the need to discuss Tulu's status as a second language with the present minister. Although initially skeptical about hosting Kambala in Bengaluru due to its association with the coastal region, Siddaramaiah acknowledged the city's significant population from coastal Karnataka. Impressed by the large turnout, he encouraged the organizers to make the event an annual fixture in November or December. While there have been calls to ban Kambala and Jallikattu, the CM stated that his government has previously supported these traditional races. To further support Kambala, the government has announced a financial grant of Rs 1 crore, with an immediate release of Rs 5 lakh. An Operation in Pune by The Red Dot Campaign

Eco India: In partnership with Rotary Pune and the Kagad Kach Patra Kashtakari Panchayat (KKPKP), Solid Waste Collection and Handling, a wholly-owned cooperative of independent waste workers based in Pune, launched the "Red Dot campaign" to assist waste pickers in avoiding health risks associated with improperly handling sanitary waste. Through this campaign, SWaCH is fundamentally managing sanitary waste and will keep putting pressure on the relevant parties to implement appropriate sanitary disposal systems. In Pune, SWaCH collects 650 tonnes of waste every day, of which 3–5% includes sanitary waste (pads and diapers), according to a research the organization conducted. The garbage pickers become seriously exposed to work hazards when they have to separate 20 tons (or around 20,000 kg) of sanitary waste per day. The campaign's aim is straightforward: Trash managers advise homes to separate their sanitary waste and label their paper bags or packets with a noticeable red dot to indicate that this type of garbage needs to be handled differently. Next, the garbage is delivered to a waste-to-energy facility. More Awareness Among Middle Class Strata of Society : Pune: Despite three years of increased public awareness, upper-class individuals continue to neglect the Red Dot Campaign for sanitary napkin disposal. The people who really adhere to it are those who reside in communities where middle-class residents predominate. Consciousness grew: The director of SWaCH, Aparna Susarla, disclosed that in 2017, they had two or three phone calls inquiring about this campaign; today, they received twenty-five. She added, "The sales of bags have also increased." The bags cost Rs 60 for a pack of 30, and they already have a red dot on them. Due to the fact that SWaCH waste pickers are being trained to perform intensive door-to-door outreach on the subject, residents who do not support the Red Dot program may soon receive a knock on their door! The campaign is being held in tandem with a one-year training program designed to increase the advocacy skills and sanitation knowledge of SWaCH personnel.

Historic Kalka-Shimla Railway Line Set to Resume Services from October 1

In a much-awaited development, the historic Kalka-Shimla railway line is expected to resume its services from October 1. This iconic narrow gauge railway, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, had temporarily halted its operations due to extensive damage caused by heavy rainfall, flash floods, and landslides in Himachal Pradesh. The 96-kilometer track, known for its scenic beauty, passes through 18 stations, 102 tunnels, and 988 bridges. The enchanting journey offers passengers breathtaking views of lush green valleys adorned with pine, oak, and deodar trees. Repair work commenced in July to address the damage at 352 locations along the route. So far, 327 locations have been repaired, with work ongoing at the remaining 25. Notably, the section between Jutogh and Summer Hill stations, near Shimla, was severely affected, requiring the construction of a new bridge. Mandeep Bhatia, the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) of Ambala, expressed optimism about the restoration efforts. He stated that the British-era railway line is expected to be fully restored till Shimla by September 30, with train services resuming on October 1. In the meantime, services have already commenced till Koti from September 5. To ensure the long-term resilience of the railway line, various measures are being implemented, including the construction of retaining walls, longitudinal and cross drains, and slope protection. Additionally, rock bolting, tunnel grouting, and other strategies are being employed to safeguard the track from future natural disasters. The reopening of the Kalka-Shimla railway line is a significant boost to tourism in Himachal Pradesh, offering visitors an opportunity to experience the charm of this heritage railway and explore the scenic beauty of the region. The list of Geographical Indication (GI) certified products from Uttar Pradesh has recently expanded, with four additional products receiving the prestigious GI tag. Baghpat Home Furnishing, Amroha Dholak, Kalpi Handmade paper, and Barabanki Handloom have joined the elite club of recognized goods, bringing the total count of GI certified products from the state to an impressive 52, as reported by TOI. The GI tag for these products was granted on Wednesday after a meticulous process involving legal and technical procedures. Renowned GI expert Rajni Kant, who was awarded the Padma Shri, spearheaded the efforts through his organization, Human Welfare Association (HWA). Kant highlighted that the applications for GI registration were submitted to the GI Registry in Chennai in collaboration with NABARD, Uttar Pradesh, during the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2019 and 2020. Kant further explained, "After a long legal and technical process, all these four ODOP products obtained GI status on June 14, and they are now recognized as part of the country's intellectual property." Notably, Kalpi Handmade paper stands out as the first in its category to receive the GI tag, adding to the town's cultural and historical significance. Bhajju Shyam, a renowned Gond artist and recipient of the Padma Shri award, expressed his pride in the recognition of the art form. He said, "With this, the people of tribal and Gond dominant communities will now get direct benefit." Gond paintings depict nature, trees, plants, animals, celestial bodies, rivers, and gods and goddesses, along with stories of historical events and everyday life. Each painting tells a unique story and is a masterpiece in itself. The main source of Gond painting is the Dindori district, where it has been prevalent for generations. The GI tag affirms that the art form originated from this district, and only registered authorized users can use its name. The district administration is planning to promote Gond paintings through a range of products such as greeting cards, mobile covers, and bag covers to cater to the market's demand. The collector of Dindori district, Vikas Mishra, emphasized that Gond painting is not just a medium of employment but also an identity and a symbol for the region. The district administration plans to promote the art form by making Amarkantak the center of attraction and roping in big hotels in Jabalpur. The Patangarh village in Dindori district has a Gond artist in every house and they have been practicing the art for generations. Assam's Traditional Dance Breaks World Record: 11,000 Dancers and Drummers Unite to Render a Spectacular Performance

Assam has made history with its traditional dance, the Bihu, by breaking the Guinness World Record for the largest Bihu performance at a single venue. The event took place on April 13 at the Sarusajai stadium in Guwahati and involved over 11,000 nasonis (dancers) and dhuliyas (drummers). The goal of this mega performance was to enter the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest dance performance at a single venue. The event had been in the making for quite some time, with auditions being held across the state to bring in the finest performers. The chief minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, expressed optimism that the event would help put Assam and its cultural history on the map throughout the world. The state government had set a goal to break two more world records: the largest Bihu dance in a single frame and the largest (dhuliya) drummer group. Apart from this, the certificate for the GI tag-recognised 'Assamese gamusa' was also presented to the state government. Earlier in March, the Guinness World Records had recognized a compilation of 42.9 lakh essays on Ahom commander Lachit Borphukan as the largest online photo album of handwritten notes. The Guinness World Records adjudicator Swapnil Dangarikar handed over the official letter of recognition to the Chief Minister at the Janata Bhawan in Guwahati. The certificate for the mega attempt will be handed over later. Entries for the Guinness World Records Hall of Fame were being uploaded in a portal between October and November 2022. The largest Bihu performance at a single venue showcases the state's rich cultural heritage. Know Which 9 Products Were Awarded the GI Tags by the Centre Recently

Have you heard of Gamocha? It is a unique cloth article made in Assam and found nowhere in India. It is a symbol of Assamese culture and is held in high esteem. The Assamese have reasons to rejoice as the Gamocha has been awarded the GI tag by the Centre. Eight additional items have been included in the existing Geographical Indications (GIs) list. They include Tandur red gram from Telangana, Raktsey Karpo apricot from Ladakh, Alibag white onion from Maharashtra, and five agricultural products from Kerala. GI, which has been approved by the World Trade Organization (WTO), is a term used to describe the geographic area from which a product, whether it be an agricultural product, a natural good, or a manufactured good, conveys the guarantee of quality, distinctiveness, and characteristics that are peculiar to that particular geographic region or place of origin. With this addition, there are now 432 GI tags in India overall. Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, and Karnataka are the top five states with the most GIs. Out of these, 401 are goods with an Indian provenance and 31 are from abroad. The promotion of GIs not only encourages the movement of various products among states but also helps to create a better, more dynamic cultural society in the future, in addition to fostering the development of cross-cultural societies within the nation.

This Village in Kerala Sets an Example To Combat Climate Change With a Unique Initiative

The tree banking initiative of the Meenangadi panchayat in Wayanad district is gaining momentum thanks to the collective efforts of farmers who are on a crusade to make their village carbon neutral. The initiative proposed by the NGO Thanal was received with great enthusiasm as farmers are entitled to a financial incentive. The project involves geo-tagging trees and submitting land tax receipts and Adhaar card numbers at the panchayat office. The farmer will then get Rs 50 annually for each tree, as long as s/he does not cut them down. Dr. TM Thomas Issac, a former finance minister for Kerala, came up with the concept. Thanal contributed to the development of a model that, after doing a thorough study, determined that Wayanad had excess emissions of 11,412 tonnes of carbon dioxide. It was determined to plant trees based on their importance of carbon sequestration, medicinal and spiritual purposes, economic value, growth rate, and canopy area, after discussions with forest officials and agricultural specialists. Speaking to 101Reporters, Thanal's executive director Jayakumar C said that climate change was the main challenge they were facing. Tree banking turned out to be a successful initiative in their effort to design a project that is carbon neutral. Under this project, an estimate of the amount of carbon and the number of trees required to be planted to offset it was taken. The next step was how to inspire the farmers to maintain the trees and refrain from felling them after a few decades. As a result, the concept of rewarding farmers for caring for the trees was developed. The farmers were given incentives annually and it became a win-win situation for them.

An Innovative Startup That Uses Tech To Take Care of Trees!

Imagine a startup that digitizes the process of taking care of a plant. That’s exactly the initiative of two classmates who are environmentally conscious and wish to contribute to this cause. Abhijith Kumar Meenakumari and Aashuthosh B Sai founded the startup Tree Tag which uses technology to record the growth of thousands of trees. Abhijith, a mechanical engineering graduate, has always been enthusiastic about initiatives for environmental conservation. He came across this idea when he was asked to develop a platform to track the growth of around 7000 trees as part of the tree banking initiative of Meenangadi village in Wayanad. It became a success and he was approached by many nature enthusiasts for similar services. Tree Tag was founded in 2021 and already caters to over 50 clients all over the globe. The majority of its business prospects arise from its client’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) projects that prioritize environmental conservation. Tree Tag helps to track the status of trees planted during afforestation projects carried out by companies in association with NGOs or other such organizations. It is also collaborating with a major project of tracking one million trees in the Amazon, the largest rainforest in the world. It also has plans to use satellite as well as drone-based services for its larger projects. In a hackathon organized by Kerala Startup Mission (KSUM), - Climathon-2022, the company was adjudged the winner. It has won numerous accolades for addressing environmental issues.

This New Initiative Helps Feed Hundreds of Hungry Children

Have you ever wondered what happens to the leftover food at the airport food outlets? It is sad to know that a large amount of food is going to the bin as there are no takers, maybe due to the cancellation of flights and other reasons. As there is no specific pattern to flight delays and cancellations, it leads to extra meals left at the end of the day. That is why TFS(Travel Food Services) the company that runs restaurants and food outlets at Mumbai and Delhi airports has tied up with an NGO, Feeding India so that the excess meals reach the hungry children. Travel And Food Services Travel And Food Services (TFS) is a company which runs 70 restaurants, lounges and food outlets at Mumbai and Delhi airports. Every day a food truck pulls into the airports to take away the excess food. It usually comes in the morning and sometimes in the evening too. Employees put in half an hour extra time to deliver the unsold goods to the NGO where it would be fed to the needy. Gaurav Dewan, COO and business head of TFS has plans to extend this service to Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata and Goa this year. Feeding India Feeding India is an NGO founded by Ankit Kawatra when he was disturbed by the wastage of food at a lavish wedding that he attended. He quit his job to start this NGO to collect such leftover food from restaurants so that it reaches the hungry instead of being thrown away. Before picking up the food, a quality check is conducted to ensure it is fresh and unused. The beneficiary is located within a radius of 5km so that food is consumed within 90 minutes. In our country where the UN has estimated that 40% of food is lost or wasted at different stages from harvesting to consumption, this initiative will go a long way in reducing food wastage.

Famous Prasad of Palani Temple in Tami Nadu Gets GI Tag

The Dhandayuthapani Swamy temple in Palani, Tamil Nadu is renowned for its prasad which is also called Palani panchamirtham. Recently, thanks to the efforts of the temple authorities, the Prasad has been bestowed with the GI tag. Panchamirtham Prasadam The prasad is made of five natural ingredients - banana, cow ghee, cardamom, jaggery and honey – which is why the ‘pancha’, meaning five, comes in the name. ‘Amirtham’ translates to delicacy in Tamil, hence the name Panchamirtham. The ingredients are combined in the prescribed proportions to make the much-loved prasad. The prasadam gets an extra flavour by the dates and sugar candies added to it. The preparation of the prasad is automated with due importance given to quality and hygiene. It is certified by the FSSAI. The GI tag limitation extends to the Palani town as well. Geographical Indication (GI) Tag A geographical indication (GI) is a name or sign given to certain products which have its origin in a specific geographical location (e.g. a town, region, or country). Products with GI tag possess qualities or a reputation that are due to that origin. Some examples of products with GI tag include Kancheepuram silk, Kohapuri footwear, Madhubani Paintings, Darjeeling Tea and Tirupati Laddu. The advantage of the GI tag is that it prevents the misuse of the product. The producer can legally charge anyone not belonging to the GI region trying to use their GI tag and save his reputation from being damaged.

This NGO Is Teaching Kids In Bengaluru Stories Behind The City's Heritage

Having a deep insight into a city and its heritage helps you widen your knowledge and pass on the understanding of it to the present and upcoming generation. And in Bengaluru, a group of volunteers trained by Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage are incorporating the stories behind the local history of the city in children. The kids first learn about the history and heritage of the city through six weeks of activities in class and then they are taken to field trips to get a better understanding. The volunteers spend an hour every week with class 7 and 8 students. In a conversation with Deccan Herald about the indoor and outdoor activities, a volunteer, Pallavi Murthy who is also an architect said: “In class, we try to tell the people’s history through games, activities like comparing the old map of Pete area with new ones etc. On the field, there are several places, from Begur inscription to the Tipu Palace, that stand as evidence for stories beyond the dynasties.” The convener of the NGO’s Bengaluru chapter, Meera Iyer told the portal that the idea of taking the city’s heritage to schools came into action when she got in touch with two non-profits, Mantra and Makkala Jagruti. The plan is to include eight schools and they have already commenced the classes in four schools. Engaging youth in history can urge them to safeguard the heritage and preserve it for the future. The volunteers at INTACH are doing a wonderful job and we hope such initiatives are taken in each and every city.

Making India Polio Free.

Pulse Polio Immunisation (PPI) programme was launched by President Ram Nath Kovind for 2018 by administering polio drops to children less than five years old on Saturday at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. The event took place on The National Immunisation Day which is observed on 28th January. More than 17 crore children of less than five years across the country will be given polio drops as part of the government’s drive to eradicate polio from the country and make India polio-free. Present at the function, the Union Ministry for Health and Family Welfare JP Nadda said, “We need to remain vigilant and maintain the population’s immunity and [continue] sensitive surveillance till global polio eradication happens as poliovirus is still circulating in other parts of the world and may reinfect us.” The government is making all the possible efforts to protect children from more and more diseases. “It is important that all vaccines under the programme reach every last child of our country,” stated the minister. “To provide additional protection to our children, we have also introduced the injectable Inactivated Polio Vaccine (IPV) into the routine immunization programme.”concluded the Union Health and Family Welfare Minister.

A Fitting Reply To The Greed For Dowry

When the going gets tough, the tough get going. A Kota bride was a picture of courage and strength when she refused to give in to the demands of dowry and called off her marriage on her wedding day. The bride Dr Rashi, who is a dentist by profession refused to marry her suitor when the groom’s parents demanded a dowry of around Rs 1 crore. Dr Rashi was to get married to Dr Saksham Saxena, an assistant professor and resident of Gwalior. The ‘barat’ for the marriage arrived on Saturday and was put up at the luxurious heritage hotel, Brijraj Palace. On Sunday noon, the groom and his family demanded cash, gold and silver jewellery worth around Rs 1 crore. The bride’s father, Dr Anil Saxena disclosed that at the time of 'roka' (engagement) in November, they had given around Rs 3 to 4 lakh in gifts and cash. He also said that they had spent a total of around Rs 30-35 lakh for the wedding. On Saturday, the groom was given a car and five gold coins of 10 grams each. This unexpected demand from the groom’s side, therefore, was a rude shock for him. The doctor and his wife informed about this additional dowry demand to their daughter who then spoke to the groom. He, however, refused to budge. The bride then decided to cancel the marriage. She said that being the only daughter, her parents had planned a wedding with all possible luxuries, gifts and cash in dowry, but on seeing the unending greed of the groom and his family, she decided not to go ahead with the marriage. Dr Anil Saxena filed a complaint the groom and his family on Monday and the police are now investigating the case. Dr Rashi’s decision is a perfect step to be followed by the society to fight the evil of dowry.

World Heritage Week celebrations begin throughout India

Celebrations of the World Heritage Week has begun in many parts of India. The World Heritage Week is observed from November 19 to 25 every year to make people aware of the importance of cultural heritage and its preservation. In Tamil Nadu, a photo exhibition on the ‘Evolution of Chola Temples’ was held as the World Heritage Week celebrations commenced at the Sri Brihadeeswarar Temple here on Sunday. The Archaeological Society of India is hosting the event while the Department of Arts and Culture is organising a cultural programme every evening in connection with the Heritage Week at the venue. An epigraphy (study of ancient scripts) class was held for students at Adhi Jeganathaperumal temple in which students actively participated. In Jammu, Minister of State for Education, Culture & Tourism, Priya Sethi called for collective efforts for preservation and restoration of State’s rich heritage. She visited the Heritage Wadia Museum in the PG Department of Geology and Zoology at GGM Science College Jammu. She asked the geology department to establish Wadia Centre in honour of the doyen of Indian Geology and institution builder D N Wadia. Students from the schools and colleges enthusiastically take part in the celebration of World Heritage Week. They read different slogans related to the encouragement of the preservation of historical heritage and monuments of the country.

Hyderabad’s Famous Biryani On Indian Postage Stamp

Now, a mail from the Indian post might make your mouth water as you may find Hyderabad’s sumptuous meal, Biryani on the postage stamp. The Department of Post has issued stamps with photos of Hyderabad's trademark cuisine biryani, baghare baingan and seviyan on Friday. As Hyderabad is all set to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the construction of Golconda Fort and foundation of Qutub Shahi dynasty in two months, the stamps are a tribute to the rich and varied cuisine of this historical city. These stamps are part of the postage on 24 different Indian dishes, including the famous Tirupati laddu. Other South Indian dishes like Idli-dosa and pongal have also been honoured with exclusive stamps. There are many stories revolving around the origin of Biryani. Biryani in Persian means fried onion. According to city historian Dr. Mohammad Safiullah, who is doing research on the foods of Hyderabad, Emperor Babar had brought Biryani to North India. In the south, Qutub Shahis, who were of Iranian descent, introduced several Persian and Turkish dishes including Biryani. Another hallmark dish of the royal kitchens of Hyderabad is the Bagare baingan. As baingan (eggplant) is native to India, it had always formed part of the Indian cuisine. Cuisine experts are not sure when seviyan became part of Id-ul-Fitr celebrations.Seviyan was introduced into Deccan by the Qutub Shahis.

Heritage walks in Old Delhi!

Delhi Metro offers its passengers participation in ‘Heritage Walk’ in Old Delhi every Saturday! This walk will be from four metro station in Old Delhi. This is an initiative from the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) offering special walks through areas of Old Delhi that will give a much detailed view of Old Delhi’s cultural and heritage landmarks. The inaugural walk entitled ‘An Empire’s Tale through the Blooming Red’ was held on August 5. A total of eight walks with different themes will be arranged on all weekends of August. This comes as a part of their pilot project. Delhi Metro is working in tie up with Delhi Walks which organizes various walks for visitors to historical places across the nation. In the ‘Heritage Walk’, the tourists or visitors will gather at the metro stations of Old Delhi and then start their walk with trained guides. The walk will cover various landmarks like the Red Fort, Jama Masjid, Chawri Bazar and Chandni Chowk. Every walk charges Rs. 500 per head and is for about 60 to 90 minutes. The aim of this initiative is to bring the city’s rich heritage and culture close to people. The initiative is in its pilot phase and will be extended depending on its feedback.

A film on Tagore’s story to be screened at Cannes

A film on Rabindranath Tagore’s story is all set to be screened at the Cannes Film Festival’s. It will be screened in the Marche du Film section in the festival. Aneek Chaudhuri, a 24-year-old Kolkata boy has made a film that expresses the simplicity of Rabindranath Tagore through the complex style of Salvador Dali. Marche du Film is the business counterpart of the coveted festival and is considered one of the largest film markets in the world. This 143-minute film, shot largely at a palatial house in Canning in South 24-Parganas district, apart from Kolkata and New Delhi, has been scheduled to be screened May17, the opening day, as part of producer Alder and Associates Entertainment’s line-up at the festival. The film, titled Streer Potro (The Wife’s Letter), is loosely themed on Tagore’s famous short story of the same name. It was shot in about 12 days and at a budget of Rs 10 lakh. As per the report published in Hindustan Times, “The text of Streer Potro has been loosely used as the plot but the form of surrealism dominates the work. Protagonist is named X and he is trying to relate himself to a particular constant, which he is failing to find,” Chaudhuri said. According to him, the story in the film revolves around the central idea that ‘mathematics is never sufficient to prove the validity of verbal language and emotions’. The director describes the film as ‘Harsh, dark, sarcastic, sensuous and painful’. “To put it simple, emotions are better deciphered when not calculated. Manipulations cannot compensate for emotions,” he said. Originally from Kolkata, this director shifted to ew Delhi for a corporate job which he quit for his love for films. Premiered at Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute in October last year, the film was also screened at Hamilton Film Festival in Canada in November and the European Film Market during Berlinale in February this year. “The film actually tries to find a way of balancing between life’s complexities and its basic simplicity. Here, Dali’s surrealism represents the complexities through which I have tried to reach the life’s simplicities that Tagore unearthed and hailed,” informed Chaudhari who is a film graduate.

Remembering women from Tagore’s family

As the country observes the 156th birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore, Kolkata celebrates it in a unique way. On Rabindranath Tagore's 156th birth anniversary, Visva-Bharati has decided to pay tribute to some of the most talented women of the Tagore household,. These women are the pioneers of societal change in 19th century Bengal. A museum ‘Thakurbarir Kalyani’ has come up inside Rabindra Bhavan in Visva-Bharati to celebrate at least 25 of these women whose achievements were not well documented all this while. Tagore helped all these women by being a catalyst to help them achieve their greatness. Starting with Tagore's mother Sarada Devi, the museum takes visitors through the lives of his sisters, sisters-in-law, daughters and nieces who thought ahead of their times. Being country’s first fashion designer, Tagore’s sister-in-law Gyanadanandini Devi was a believer of free environment and thoughts in the society. She designed modern way of wearing saree accompanied with jackets. Together with Tagore, she started 'Balak' magazine, converted two popular fairy tales into plays and regularly wrote essays for 'Bharati' magazine. Two of Tagore's elder sisters, Soudamini Devi and Swarnakumari Devi were at that time considered to be equally good writers. While the former translated Hafez, wrote a treatise on father Debendranath and penned songs, with Tagore dedicating his 'Bouthakur-anir Haat' to her, the latter was the first novelist of the Tagore household. Among the others who have been included in the exhibition are Tagore's sisters-in-law Kadambari Devi and Prafullamoyee Devi, his wife Mrinalini, daughter-in-law Pratima Devi, nieces Indira Devi Chowdhurani and Sarala Devi and sister Barna Kumari Devi. According to a report published in The Times of India, Visva-Bharati VC Swapan Kumar Dutta said, “As we delved deep into the lives of these brilliant women, we were amazed at their depth and their contribution to modern Bengal. Very little had been known about them so far and this is our tribute to Tagore this year. However, this is just the beginning and we will keep adding to the collection.”

Government to ask restaurants to fix portions to stop food wastage

A fortnight after Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed concern about wastage of food in his monthly Mann Ki Baat radio programme, the union food minister, Ram Vilas Paswan has asked owners of restaurants and five star hotels to fix portions in order to avoid wastage of food in the country. A report in the Hindustan times has disclosed that the ministry was drafting a questionnaire for hotels and restaurants to explain the appropriate dish size they should serve to a customer. Paswan said that they are just asking them to specify how many chapatis or idlis or chicken pieces they would serve in a plate. In plate system, a hotel or restaurant normally does not mention the amount of food that will be served, like the number of chapatis or the quantity of rice. The government wants them to specify and mention (in the menu card) that how much they would serve in a portion. In his Mann Ki Baat last month, Modi took up the issue of food wastage at feasts and termed it as injustice to the poor. Food wastage and subsequently food shortage is a big problem in India. A September 2016 government report said that the amount of food wasted in India can feed all of Bihar for a year.

Supreme Court now passes a law to prohibit sale of BS-III vehicle

Keeping in mind the health of citizens, Supreme Court ruled out the sale of Bharat Stage (BS)-III vehicles on and from April 1. Supreme Court has forbidden all vehicle registering authorities under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 to register any vehicle that doesn’t meet the BS-IV emission standards. Only the non BS-IV vehicles sold before March 31, 2017 are allowed provided they have a proof for the same. Bench of Justice Madan B. Lokur and Deepak Gupta ordered in their statement that non BS-IV compliant vehicles, may it be two-wheeler, three-wheeler, four-wheeler or commercial vehicles, shall not be sold in the country by any manufacturer or dealer. Luxury can be ignored but necessity can't be ignored. Food is a necessity to survive for every individual on earth. Surviving a day without a meal is something one cannot imagine. But we still continue wasting large portions of meals every day. Food wastage can be reduced and if care is taken then according to estimates saving one-fourth of the food currently lost it wasted would be enough to serve 870 million hungry people globally. Food is wasted at different stages starting from the process of production to the consumption by humans, a part of the total quantity gets wasted. Maximum food loss happens from transit from the farms to the urban markets. These losses can be avoided by proper care and transport facility. But we all know, to every problem exists a solution. The solution to save our food and it's resources needs to be worked upon. A few steps below can reduce wastage of food at every level and save meals for millions. Balancing food production with demand should be the first step to reduce food wastage. As production of food needs various resources, if measured and used cautiously can save resources and means put into production. Better food harvesting, storing, processing and distribution programmes should be placed as that not only avoids wastage but also avoids the supply of excess food where the need is less. The government needs to plan more food reduction initiatives to save the excess food and distribute the same to NGO's so the needy receives a meal. And lastly we, we the people need to plan our meals. Every time we plan a family trip we try to save maximum by spending only that amount which is needed, let's adopt the same for food. Buy that amount quantity which you can enjoy. Anything in excess cannot be enjoyed. And when we food is in access we only tend to waste. Food waste can be divided into pre-consumer stage and post-consumer stage. Pre-consumer wastage occurs during production, transportation, storage and distribution. Majority of the post-consumer food wastage comes from social and family functions as well as hotels and canteens. To put brakes on such humongous post consumer wastage, changes in traditions and mindset of people is required. We all need to think why the amount of splurging on weddings, birthday parties and other social events is considered a yardstick of one’s social standing. Government rules and laws are not enough to tackle this menace. Of course, improving storage facilities and transportation is something that our government should aim for, yet, we too as people, as families, as a society, should be ready to make changes in our lifestyle. There are people amongst us who have turned social entrepreneurs for the cause of “Zero Food wastage”. They collect food waste from banquets, hotels, marriage halls and parties and supply them to the needy. Not every one of us can afford to do this. The story is as follows. Wrestlers there once taunted a Sufi saint Qamar Ali. The saint casted spell on the rocks used there which were used for body building. The 70 kg huge rocks can only be lifted with 11 finger tips touching it and chanting his name aloud. This magic still is experienced by many people who levitate the stone by chanting his name. As International Mother Language Day nears, his journey reminds us that language isn’t just about words—it’s about connection, culture, and breaking barriers!A Childhood Immersed in LanguageAkram’s linguistic journey began even before he was born. His father, Shilbee Mozhippriyan, an expert in 16 languages with a doctorate in cognitive psychology, wanted to ensure that his son would never face language barriers. Shilbee mentioned that when his wife was pregnant, they often discussed languages, hoping it would influence their child's interest.By the age of four, Akram had already mastered the English alphabet in just six days. Within three weeks, he had learned the 299 characters of the Tamil script—an accomplishment that typically takes months. His father introduced him to ancient Tamil scripts like Vatteluttu, Grantha, and Tamizhi, which he quickly absorbed. By six, he had surpassed his father’s knowledge and ventured into self-learning.Between ages six and eight, Akram expanded his repertoire to 50 languages, relying on books and online resources like Omniglot, an encyclopedia of languages. His passion led him to set his first world record at just eight years old as the youngest multilingual typist. He continued breaking records, including writing the Indian national anthem in 20 languages within an hour at the age of ten.Overcoming Educational ChallengesDespite his extraordinary talent, conventional education did not accommodate his unique learning path. Schools in India did not recognize his linguistic prowess, and he struggled to find an institution that specialized in languages. Akram then enrolled in an online school in Israel, studying major global languages like Arabic, Spanish, French, and Hebrew.When he wanted to transition back to a traditional school, Indian institutions refused to accept him unless he started from the sixth grade. Unwilling to compromise, Akram completed his education through the National Institute of Open Schooling. His talent eventually earned him a scholarship to Danube International School in Vienna, Austria. Here, he got the opportunity to interact with classmates from 39 different nationalities, thus helping him to refine his fluency.Today, Akram is pursuing degrees in linguistics from the Open University in the UK, English Literature, and Animation from Alagappa University in Chennai. The Art of Speaking and Staying ConnectedUntil the age of 14, Akram could only say basic phrases in many languages. Determined to improve, he immersed himself in native conversations and now speaks 15 languages fluently. To stay connected with the languages he has learned, Akram integrates them into his daily life. His favorite language remains Tamil, his mother tongue. He found Japanese surprisingly easy due to its similarities with Tamil, while Czech, Finnish, and Vietnamese proved the most challenging.For Akram, his linguistic journey is about more than setting records. 'Nambie Jessica Marak' from Meghalaya : Epic Success Story

Her Back Story & Initiative Streamlined : Nambie's introduction to the kitchen began when she was a child in Shillong when her mother encouraged the children to prepare their meals. When Nambie Jessica Marak relocated to Chennai to further her education, she missed home food. She was from Upper Rangsa, a village in Meghalaya's West Khasi Hills. While she enjoyed the dosas, idlis, and biryanis, she craved her comfort food, which was a country chicken soup with fiddlehead ferns. What bothered her the most was the stereotype of Northeast culture and food. She looked for YouTube channels to teach her friends about the complexities of her food. Finding that the majority of the channels were in local languages, she decided to start her own in 2015 called 'Eat Your Kappa' to document Northeastern food. Even after impressing top chefs, including British Chef Marco Pierre White, she admits she's "not so good at cooking!" She found time for her YouTube videos while working as an assistant professor in a college. During her vacations, she would return home and shoot videos every day. Since her village did not have internet access, she would edit and upload the videos after returning to Chennai. On her channel, she dispels myths about Northeastern cuisine. According to her, people frequently believe it is all about "eating bizarre food" or "eating anything that moves.". Added Stepping Stones Of Life alongside: While her YouTube channel was thriving, she was forced to return home due to her mother's illness. She packed her belongings and relocated to Upper Rangsa with her infant daughter in 2019. A few months later, her husband, who was also a teacher, packed his belongings, quit his job, and followed in her footsteps. Since they were the two most educated people in the entire village of 150 people, they were given the opportunity to effect change when a private school in the neighboring village was about to close. Nambie wholeheartedly embraced this responsibility and devoted her time to teaching as well. During all this lifetime of work she is often questioned : Teaching or Cooking? Addressing the question: ‘I have always been connected to food and I really enjoy being around children. You learn something new in both teaching and cooking. Every day is a new day in the kitchen as well as the classroom. I love it. Why would I choose between the two?’ laughs Nambie.

A.K. Perumal: Pioneering the Preservation of Tamil Folklore for Future Generations

In a world dominated by social media, A.K. Perumal, a 73-year-old folklore researcher and literary historian from Kanniyakumari, has dedicated over four decades to preserving Tamil folklore and oral history for future generations. With two state awards and nearly a hundred books under his belt, Perumal's contributions have been hailed by renowned personalities like actor Kamal Hassan. Perumal's journey began with his undergraduate studies in Tamil literature at ST Hindu College in Nagercoil, followed by a master's degree in the government arts and science college in Chittur, Kerala. His passion for folklore led him to pursue a Ph.D. in Villupattu from Madurai Kamaraj University, mentored by anthropology scholar V. Chidambaranathan. Throughout his career, Perumal has extensively researched various folk arts, temple culture, and palm leaf transcriptions in Kanniyakumari district. He has collected and documented Mudaliyar palm leaf manuscripts from Kerala archives, shedding light on the district's administrative history from the 15th to the 19th century. Perumal has also traveled across the state, meticulously documenting folk art forms in his 95 books. Not only does Perumal interact with and document dwindling circles of folk artists, but he also strives to provide them with welfare assistance. His scholarly approach, coupled with a keen observer's eye, enables him to transcend academic polarities and see reconciliation where others see conflict. Despite offers from abroad, Perumal remains committed to his work, diligently preserving Tamil culture through his writings. His contributions, particularly in leather puppet shows, have uplifted sections of folk artists and earned him recognition from experts in the field.

The DHAN Foundation, through its decade-long saga of organizing heritage walks, has been instrumental in preserving and reviving cultural heritage across Madurai and other remote locations in Tamil Nadu. These transformative walks have brought new meaning to mundane things and allowed participants to discover the rich archaeological treasures scattered across the region. Under the guidance of the DHAN Foundation, college student R Eswaran and numerous others have embarked on journeys through heritage villages such as Keezhamattiyam, Thenkarai, Thiruvedagam, Thenur, Kodimangalam, Thuvariman, and Vikramangalam. Retired archaeologist V Vedachalam has lent his voice to these ancient tales, painting a vivid picture of Madurai's bustling past as a trade center that welcomed traders from Varanasi to Kanniyakumari. The success of these heritage walks is attributed to the collaborative efforts of the community, students, and village youth. KP Bharathi, advisor of DHAN Tourism for Development, emphasizes the importance of both tangible and intangible heritage in preserving culture. The foundation has orchestrated over 300 heritage walks in remote locations, transforming historically obscure sites into cultural landmarks. Addressing the erosion of heritage resources due to poverty, the DHAN Foundation has championed public-private-community partnerships, collaborating with organizations such as ASI, State Archaeology, Tourism Department, NABARD, and CSR institutions. Despite challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the foundation has consistently organized heritage walks once a month for the past 10 years. The efforts of the DHAN Foundation extend beyond Madurai, resonating through Thanjavur to Tirunelveli, with contributions from professors S Rajavelu and N Athiyaman from Thanjavur Tamil University's Department of Maritime History and Marine Archaeology. From Grit to Glory: Indian Shatters Boundaries in Grueling Marathon Des Sables

Mahasweta Ghosh discovered her love for sandy terrains, which inspired her to take on the ultimate challenge—the Marathon Des Sables (MDS), renowned as the world's toughest race. This multi-stage, multi-day race takes place in the Moroccan Sahara desert, spanning approximately 256 km over seven grueling days, with one stage being an arduous 85-90 km long. In a remarkable feat, Ghosh became the first Indian woman to complete the MDS. The Marathon des Sables demands not only physical endurance but also mental fortitude. Runners must be self-sufficient throughout the race, carrying everything from their nourishment and medical supplies to their race equipment and bivouac gear. In addition to the immense distance—where the longest stage covers 90 km—participants must contend with the unforgiving Saharan environment. Ghosh, 44, fell in love with desert terrain after participating in a race in Pokhran, Rajasthan. Reflecting on the challenges, she shared, "You stop every now and then to look around at the stunning landscape. But the rest of the time, you are looking down constantly because either you'll slide on sand or trip on stone. There is no shade and no respite from the sun. It is ruthless." She emphasized the importance of resilience and focus, as mirages often deceive runners along the way. Despite scorching temperatures reaching up to 48 degrees Celsius, Ghosh, residing in Gurugram, found the heat to be the least of her concerns. Her meticulous training involved precise planning and significant effort. Alongside running, Ghosh dedicated herself to strength training, mobility workouts, and recovery sessions, which were essential for her performance and overall well-being. She acknowledged her coach, Dr. Jason Karp, and nutritionist, Dr. Ryan Fernando, for customizing her training routine and diet plan. With a week of preparation in Marrakech before the race, including short runs, light stretches, meditation, and leisure activities, Ghosh arrived at the starting line feeling both nervous and excited about the upcoming challenges. Her race strategy focused on completing each day and preparing for the next, with the sole goal of finishing the race. Ghosh's incredible achievement, as one of the few to conquer the MDS, will forever remain a cherished moment in her life. Preserving History and Nurturing Tradition: Ayyanar's Legacy of Vessels and Toys

In a small village nestled in Puducherry, a man named Ayyanar has embarked on a remarkable journey to preserve the treasures of the past. Beyond the mere functionality of vessels and the joy of toys, Ayyanar recognizes the cultural significance they hold and the stories they carry. To him, each piece of crockery and cookware carries a rich historical narrative. Among his unique collection is the Rail Aduki, a set of fourteen to eighteen vessels specifically designed for cooking while traveling. Complete with plates and spoons, this set made it convenient to prepare and serve meals for an entire family on the go. According to Ayyanar, each vessel has a scientific purpose behind its creation. For instance, the Kinni, a bowl-like vessel, was used by our ancestors to feed young children. The rhythmic tapping of the spoon against the Kinni helped lull the child to sleep. Unfortunately, these traditions have been forgotten, leading to difficulties in childcare today. In addition to his collection of vessels, Ayyanar also gathers toys from bygone eras. One such toy is the Marapachi Bommai, which prioritized children's well-being without conforming to societal norms. Traditionally given to the groom before marriage, the doll would later become a toy for the couple's child. Crafted from rare wood with medicinal properties, these dolls ensured that biting the toy transferred the essence of the tree to the child's body, posing no risk or harm. Ayyanar's three-storey house stands as a witness to the endurance of time, and the vessels within flutter the hearts of those who witness their legacy. Ayyanar dreams of a future where these vessels are not forgotten, but embraced once again. By using these vessels, we can take a step towards a plastic-free world, where the traditions of the past merge with the sustainability of the future. Suhani Dadphale, an eighteen-year-old was not one to sit idle during the covid lockdown. She was fascinated to realize how Instagram can be a platform to help artists and content creators to reach out and perform. Suhani, on realizing that there was not enough platform for people to express their creativity, try new ideas, and develop new things, started Sangam in 2020 to support local artists, entrepreneurs, and creative minds by providing a platform for them to network, grow their businesses, and showcase their talents. From a team of three, Sangam soon expanded as like-minded people joined her mission to propagate art. The crew began planning events like music festivals and open mic nights by the end of 2020. The main platforms used for the online events were Zoom, Google Meet, and Instagram Live. Over the years, as Sangam grew Suhani gained clarity about her vision - to monetize art. Such produce was equally nutritious, yet discarded as they didn’t appeal to the eyes. Aditi decided to reduce such food wastage by procuring the discarded agricultural produce and converting it into nutritious and delicious food. Thus Platano Foods, a sustainable food solutions startup was conceived by Aditi. Innovative And Healthy Food Products The startup collects unripe bananas that are rejected by cold storage facilities. After conducting quality checks, the bananas are converted into raw banana flour which is extremely nutritious and has a good shelf life. The startup later introduced delicious and nutritious cookies by mixing the banana flour with traditional millets and seeds. These cookies are free from preservatives, trans fats and refined flour making it a hit among the health-conscious people. The First Woman to Bag 3 Top Awards at IIT Madras With Her Academic Brilliance Receives Award From PM Modi

Kavita Gopal scripted history when she became the first girl student of IIT Madras to win the President of India Prize. She was awarded the prize by the prime minister PM Modi for outstanding academic performance on the occasion of the institute’s 56th annual convocation. Earlier this award has been won only by male students. Ms. Gopal won a hattrick as she bagged two more coveted awards- the Bharat Ratna M Vishveswarayya Memorial prize for highest CGPA in B.Tech and the B Ravichandran memorial prize for highest CGPA in B.Tech Computer Science and Engineering with. Her CGPA is an impressive 9.95. Early Years Kavita studied in the Atomic Energy Central School in Anupuram until 10th and then joined Kendriya Vidyalaya, Kalpakkam. It was here, in 11th class she was introduced to Computer Science and programming languages as part of her syllabus. She instantly developed a passion for it and then there was no looking back. She joined IIT Madras in 2015. She participated in many inter-college programming contests and excelled in them. She also enjoyed playing basketball. Future Plans Talking to The News Minute, Kavita said that she has some thrilling plans for the future and it involves coding. She is currently working as a software engineer with Google. According to Kavita, girls who are interested in this field hesitate from joining these courses due to social barriers and gender biases. In her class, there were only 10 girls in the batch of 60 students. Health Worker Goes the Extra Mile to Make Basic Healthcare Accessible to Mothers

The Central government has been trying its best to uplift the health of people in rural areas by introducing various schemes and facilities. However, due to lack of awareness among the villagers, these provisions are not harnessed to the fullest. This gap came to the notice of Shanta Garg, an Accredited Social Health Activist or ASHA worker who works in a village near Udaipur, Rajasthan. She decided to bridge the gap by making basic healthcare accessible to those living on the margins. Scope Of Work Shanta is a postgraduate who after receiving training, set out on the daily task of visiting 10 houses. She conducts various IEC (information education and communication) activities to educate mothers and children. These activities include games and stories to inculcate in them the importance of health, hygiene and nutrition. The session conducted for mothers and grandmothers was very well received. Challenges Faced The biggest challenge faced was the lack of awareness among villagers. Pregnant women wouldn’t register for the Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan and didn’t avail its facilities. Shanta realized that the major hurdle was from mothers-in-law who were skeptical of these facilities and didn’t allow the women to register. Shanta then began to educate and convince the mothers-in-law and after years of counseling, they now bring their daughters-in-law to register and access the healthcare facilities. Due to Shanta’s pioneering work, children in the village have been receiving proper nutrition and vaccination. Mothers are also aware of their diet during pregnancy and how to care for newborn babies. Shanta has received awards and recognition for her work. Nisha Yadav Personifies Strength, Grit and Struggles Behind the Glamour of Fashion

Rajasthani model, Nisha Yadav was very young when her parents arranged a marriage alliance for her. However, the gritty youngster refused to marry for which she was asked to leave home. Now, Yadav is studying law and is an aspiring model who participated in the recently concluded Lakme Fashion Week. Trials And Tribulations Yadav came from a humble background. She had to walk six kilometres to reach school. She nurtured big dreams but was being pushed into marriage at a young age. A determined Yadav refused to marry and was asked to leave home. Her sisters supported her and were also asked to leave. It is a matter of great admiration that the girls have made it big- One is an IAS officer, another is in the police, the third one is a software engineer while the fourth is a professor. Praise and Adulations Nisha Yadav’s story of overcoming obstacles to achieve success impressed Union Minister Smriti Irani so much that she took to Instagram to tell the world about it. She spoke about the success that the aspiring model found after struggling and working hard for it. Citing her example, Irani emphatically said that daughters should be married only after their education is completed after they are adults, and when they wish to get married. Shells from Captain Cook’s Epic Voyage Rediscovered After 40 Years in the Trash!

After being believed lost for almost 40 years, an 18th-century shell collection from Captain James Cook's third expedition has been restored to English Heritage after being retrieved from a skip in "nothing short of a miracle." For the first time in almost a century, the collection of more than 200 specimens—among which is an extinct species and many thought to have been returned from Cook's tragic expedition—will be put on public display. A retired scientist found the things in the trash that a university had thrown out. Where Were These 'Shells' Until Now? Bridget Atkinson (1732–1814) was passionate about the collection, and documented about Britain's importance in international trade and its colonial expansion in the late 18th century. She collected more than 1,200 shells from all around the world, although she never left Cumbria and rarely left Britain. John Clayton (1792–1890), her grandson, inherited the collection until these shells were auctioned in 1930 together with the Clayton estate. About 200 of the artifacts were loaned to Armstrong College's (now Newcastle University) zoology department after being on exhibit at Chesters Roman Fort and Museum in Northumberland. However, the shells were discarded during a university office purge in the 1980s. It has recently been made public that they were saved from a skip by a passing professor named Doctor John Buchanan, despite initial fears that they had been lost forever. The Buchanan family has since given them to English Heritage, and they have been brought back to the museum to be reunited with the enormous clam that used to be the only surviving item in the collection. The family of Dr. Buchanan stated: "Our father worked at the Dove Marine Laboratory in Cullercoats as a marine biologist and senior professor from 1958 until his retirement. The shells were saved by him since he was a conservationist, and they were kept in our family's house for thirty-five years. ''We learned that the shells were a part of the Clayton Collection after our mother passed away. Switzerland recently claimed a world record - for the world’s longest passenger train. The world's longest passenger train is owned by the Rhaetian Railway business in Switzerland. According to a report from the Associated Press, the train traveled 1.9 kilometers (1.2 miles) along the Albula/Bernina route from Preda to Bergün. The train traveled through one of the most spectacular tracks in the Alps, along the picturesque route, which is noted for its 48 bridges and 22 tunnels, many of which pass through mountains. It is one of the most beautiful pathways and was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008. Rail aficionados watched the 25 sections of the train go 25 kilometers (15.5 miles) through the Alps while they were present in the valley to watch the splendid sight of the long train maneuvering through the mountains. In a little more than an hour, the entire trip was finished. Renato Fasciati, director of the Rhaetian Railway Company, stated that the record was intended to highlight some of Switzerland's engineering accomplishments and commemorate 175 years of Swiss railroads. The Director told the local media, "For me, this is just Swiss perfection." The company declared that it had beaten the Guinness World Record for the longest passenger train after the journey.

Restaurants tied up with Food Dosti offer Food Dosti points to customers who finish the food on their plate, thus encouraging patrons to aim for a cleaner plate after every meal. The points enable them to secure discounts on future meals. Another highlight of the app is that the surplus food at the restaurants is put to good use by being fed to the needy. The Food Dosti app, version 2.0 facilitates tie-ups between restaurants and non-profits/NGOs so that the surplus food reaches the needy, thus ensuring no food is wasted. Dr Siddharth Dhende, who was the guest of honour at the event pledged his support towards this noble cause and assured of all help. He has proposed special concessions for the entities connected to Food Dosti for the cause. Celebrity Chef, Nilesh Limaye was also present at the event and expressed his views on zero food wastage. Director of Poona Guest House (PGH), Secretary of Pune Restaurant and Hoteliers Association (PRAHA) and a representative of Annadoot Charitable Sevabhavi Nyasa Mr Kishor Sarpotdar was present and shared his views on upcycling of food. Mr Sanjeev Neve said that his company is committed to working towards social causes and Food Dosti app is the first step in this endeavour.
