Bismi Wills: Kerala’s Forest Officer Turning Wildlife into Art
Bismi Wills, a computer engineer from Parassala, Thiruvananthapuram, never imagined that her career path would lead her deep into the forests of Kerala. Her entry into the Kerala Forest Department was not fueled by passion, but by circumstance; her name appeared on the rank list of Forest Beat Officers, and she accepted the post simply because she had cleared the exam. Yet, over the course of seven years, that chance decision has transformed her life. Today, she is not only an accomplished forest officer but also an emerging wildlife photographer, documenting moments in the forest that few ever witness.Discovering a Hidden WorldBismi’s journey began in the Pampa Range, where her curiosity about the forest slowly took root. “After my training, I began collecting leaves to identify different trees. But the information was hard to find,” That challenge pushed her to shift her focus to butterflies. Using a basic app and her first digital camera, she began identifying species and recording data during her patrols. Her fascination with nature soon expanded beyond flora and insects. When she was transferred to the Vallakkadavu Range in Kottayam, a forest teeming with elephants, sambar deer, and other wildlife, her connection with the wilderness deepened. Accompanied by Vishnu, a seasoned forest watcher and wildlife photographer, she learned to track animals, understand their behavior, and capture them on camera.Learning the Art of PatienceBismi’s transformation from a novice to a wildlife photographer has been defined by patience and perseverance. “Sometimes, you wait for hours in the same spot, and the animals never appear. Other times, a beautiful shot comes by chance,” she says. One unforgettable experience was at Kozhikanam landing, where she captured a wild dog attacking a boar across a rivulet—a scene of raw nature and survival. Though her colleague’s DSLR offered better clarity, the thrill of capturing it herself was incomparable. Another memorable encounter was with a wild tusker. She recalls climbing uphill with a colleague and finding around 25 elephants feeding, fighting, and showing affection just a few meters away. These moments illustrate the unpredictable beauty of the forest and the delicate balance between duty and passion that defines her work.Courage Amidst the WildWorking in the forest is not without risk. Bismi vividly remembers a tense encounter with an angry herd of elephants in Aanamutty. Standing only 250 meters away with no escape route, her heart raced, yet her mind was focused on capturing the perfect photograph. It is this blend of courage and artistry that sets her apart, highlighting the dedication required to serve as both a forest officer and a documenter of wildlife. Bismi represents a growing wave of women in Kerala’s Forest Department, challenging societal norms and proving that women can thrive in demanding roles. She emphasizes the importance of following one’s interests and nurturing hidden talents Technology Meets NatureBismi’s approach to wildlife photography is a fusion of modern technology and traditional tracking skills. Using a camera, a patrol app, and field knowledge, she navigates the forests with precision. With Vishnu’s guidance, she learned to position herself according to wind direction, ensuring animals wouldn’t detect her presence. She combines these practical techniques with an artist’s eye, framing shots that capture the emotions, behaviors, and interactions of wildlife in their natural habitat. Her next dream is to capture a tiger in the wild—a moment she believes will complete her journey from forest officer to true wildlife photographer.A Message for Aspiring WomenBismi’s story is not just about photography or forest patrols; it is about breaking stereotypes, embracing hidden talents, and discovering a deep connection with the natural world. She encourages young women to explore their interests, trust their instincts, and pursue what excites them—whether in forests, laboratories, or any field society may deem unconventional. Through her lens, Bismi captures not only wildlife but also a message of empowerment, proving that sometimes, the best journeys begin with chance but flourish with passion.
