In a historic first, 1,200 kg of these golden delights (400 boxes, 3 kg each) were airlifted straight from Lucknow to Dubai. The shipment, valued at $2,992 was a momentous leap for UP’s farmers.The mangoes were dispatched by Lucknow’s Mango Pack House and received by Dubai-based Vergro Trading LLC. The mango boxes were flagged off by UP’s Horticulture Minister Dinesh Pratap Singh. This marked the beginning of what’s being hailed as a sweet revolution where mangoes are celebrated as global ambassadors of Indian flavor.Malihabad: The Heartbeat of Mango KingdomIf you’re wondering where this mango magic is rooted, let’s introduce you to Malihabad, a charming town near Lucknow that practically breathes mangoes. With over 30,000 hectares of mango orchards, it’s the largest mango-producing belt in all of UP. This town isn’t just famous for its Dussehri and Langda varieties but also for generations of families here who have been cultivating mangoes for over 200 years. In fact, the Malihabadi Dussehri was granted GI (Geographical Indication) status in 2010, which means this mango literally owns its name. Every bite you take holds stories of old trees, morning harvests, and a whole legacy tucked inside the juicy pulp.Farmers Take the Lead: The Real Heroes of the StorySo, how did this mango fairy tale take flight? Not without the heroes—the farmers themselves. Under the Indo-German AMD (Agricultural Market Development) Project, three Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) in the Lucknow region were trained to meet global standards of packaging, hygiene, and export practices. Among them, Irada Farmers Producer Company Limited and Malihabad Farmer Producer Company Limited stepped up and secured direct export orders to Dubai, all on their own! For the first time, these FPOs independently managed international exports without any middlemen. The Future is Sweet (and Exported!)This isn’t just a one-time news bite; it’s the start of a whole new journey. The UP government, under CM Yogi Adityanath, is actively supporting mango growers by providing training, improving infrastructure, ensuring better packaging, and aligning produce with international standards. The vision? To make UP’s mangoes a regular name in global markets. As Minister Singh put it, the mission is to let the world know what we’ve always known—that India grows the best mangoes, and it’s time the world tasted them. With rising exports, strong farmer support, and a global appetite for desi flavours, the Dussehri has finally found its wings.

Why Soak Mangoes Before Eating Them: Know it All

Mangoes are the best way to beat the summer heat. Super tasty, the fruit is not just delicious but also boasts an impressive nutritional profile. Packed with vitamin C, mango provides nearly 67 percent of the DV aiding your immune system, helping your body to absorb iron, and promoting cell growth and repair. Mango is also a good source of the minerals copper and folate, which are especially important nutrients during pregnancy, as they support healthy fetal growth and development. However, it is a common belief that mangoes should always be soaked in water before you eat them. Do you know why? According to experts, soaking not only helps remove surface dirt or pesticides but also removes phytic acid, leading to better absorption of essential body nutrients. Mangoes are loaded with phytic acid - which affects how the body absorbs some minerals, including iron. It also contributes to mineral deficiencies over time. It also leads to headaches and constipation. "Soaking mangoes in water helps remove pesticide residues, dirt, grime, and debris that harbor microbes. The phytate-rich milky sap and stickiness also come off by soaking. Soaking for an hour or two with at least 10 cups of water and half a cup of 5 percent white vinegar added, is an ideal solution to wash mangoes," Dr. Dilip Gude, Senior Consultant Physician, Yashoda Hospitals stated in an interview with Times Now. Occasionally, soaking mangoes in water for some time can also result in softening their skin, making them easier to cut. Experts say this technique also works well for mangoes with tough skins. According to Dr. Gude, other ways to remove harmful contents from the mangoes include soaking 2 percent sodium carbonate for 12 hours to remove carbide and arsenic. "Place cut mango piece in warm water for 10 minutes, and if it makes the water yellow or cloudy then it is highly likely that calcium carbide has been used to ripen it," he added. Guardian of Mango Diversity: Kerala's Natural Farmer Preserves 300+ Rare Varieties on the Brink of Extinction

In a world where chemical fertilizers and pesticides have become synonymous with modern farming, M Shankaran Namboodiri, a natural farmer from Kerala, is on a mission to preserve and conserve 300-odd varieties of mangoes that are on the verge of extinction.  Namboodiri's farm, 'Moorthiyedath Mana', located near Sreekrishnapuram in Ottappalam taluk of Palakkad district, is a haven for the King of Fruits. He has been developing the garden since 1976 and has conserved mangoes from various parts of the world, including North Indian states and many native Kerala varieties.  What sets Namboodiri's farming practices apart is that he firmly believes that chemicals have no place in his three-and-a-half-acre compound. He has cultivated cardamom plants for domestic consumption and rears native breeds of cows like Ananganmala kullan and Vilwadhiri, both found in Palakkad district, Krishna Valley from Karnataka, and Kapila, found on the Kerala-Karnataka border, for generating biogas and using their dung as manure.  Namboodiri's efforts have not gone unnoticed. A former chief secretary who visited his farm in 2007 advised him to create awareness among the public on the need to conserve traditional plant varieties. Namboodiri's farm serves as an inspiration for many who aspire to preserve our rich agricultural heritage.

फळांचा राजा म्हणून ओळख असलेला कोकणच्या हापूस आंब्याची निर्यात लासलगावमार्गे अमेरिकेला सुरू झाली आहे. आपल्या वैशिष्ट्यपूर्ण चवीने अवघ्या जगावर अधिराज्य गाजवणाऱ्या भारतातील हापूस आंब्याची अमेरिकावारी सुरू झाली आहे. लासलगाव येथील भाभा अणू संशोधन केंद्रातून हापूस आंब्यावर विकिरण प्रक्रिया होऊन पहिला कंटेनर शुक्रवारी अमेरिकेला रवाना करण्यात आला. फळमाशीच्या प्रादुर्भावाचे कारण युरोपिय महासंघाने भारतातून येणाऱ्या हापूस आंब्यावर २०१३ मध्ये बंदी घातली होती. त्यामुळे फाळांचा राजा असलेल्या हापूसचे आता काय होणार यांची चिंता वाढली होती. मात्र, ती चिंता आता कायमस्वरूपी मिटली आहे. गेल्या काही वर्षांपासून अमेरिकेने ठरवून दिलेल्या मापदंडाचे काटेकोर पालन केला जात असल्याने भारतीय हापूस आंब्याची मोठ्या झपाट्याने अमेरिकेला निर्यात केली जात आहे. पहिल्याच दिवशी साडेसात मेट्रिक टन हापूस आंबा रवाना झाला आहे. अमेरिकेला पाठविण्यात येणाऱ्या हापूस आंब्यावर लासलगाव येथे विकिरण प्रक्रिया केली जाते. या हंगामातील पहिली विकिरण प्रक्रिया साडेसात मेट्रिक टन आंब्यांवर करण्यात आली. एकूण २५०० बॉक्स हापूस आणि केशर आंबा विकिरण करून अमेरिकेला पाठविण्यात आला. ७ एप्रिल ते १५ जुलै या कालावधीत लासलगावच्या या केंद्रात मुंबईच्या अँग्रो सर्च या कंपनीच्या वतीने विकिरण प्रक्रिया केली जाणार आहे. लासलगाव येथे ३१ ऑक्टोबर २००२ मध्ये तत्कालीन पंतप्रधान अटलबिहारी वाजपेयी यांच्या हस्ते उद्‍घाटन करण्यात आले होते. लासलगाव येथील कृषी उत्पादन संशोधन केंद्र येथे हा प्रकल्प कांद्यासाठी तयार करण्यात आला. मात्र, येथे आता फक्त आंब्यावर विकिरण करून तो निर्यात केला जात आहे. अमेरिकेला जाणाऱ्या आंब्यामध्ये हापूस, केशर, दशरा, बेंगणपल्ली, लंगडा या प्रमुख जातींचा समावेश आहे. लासलगावच्या केंद्रात गॅमा किरणांचा ४०० ते ७०० ग्रे मात्रा विकिरण मारा करून आंबा साठवणूक क्षमता वाढवली जाते. यामुळे आंबा पिकण्याची क्रिया लांबते, कोयीतील कीड नष्ट होते. आंब्यातील सफेद गाठ निमिर्ती थांबते. कीड रोखण्यास हा अतिशय चांगला उपाय मानला जातो. उष्णतेचा वापर न करता ही प्रक्रिया झाल्याने आंब्याचा स्वाद व ताजेपणा टिकून राहतो. कोठे-कोठे पोचणार आंबा?....लासलगाव येथून विकिरण प्रक्रिया पूर्ण करून हापूस आंबा अमेरिकेतील सॅन फ्रान्सिस्को, लॉस एन्जेलिस, शिकागो, न्यू जर्सी, ह्यूस्टन, कॅलिफोर्निया, न्यूयॉर्क या शहरांमध्ये पाठविला जाणार आहे. यंदाच्या हंगामातील पहिल्या साडेसात मेट्रिक टन आंब्यावर विकिरण प्रक्रिया करून हा आंबा व्यापाऱ्यांकडून अमेरिकेला पाठविण्यात आला आहे. मागील वर्षी सुमारे ५६० मेट्रिक टन आंबा अमेरिकेला गेले होते. यंदा ६०० ते ६५० मेट्रिक टन आंबा निर्यातीचे उद्दिष्ट्ये असल्याचे भाभा अणू संशोधन केंद्राचे प्लांट इन्चार्ज प्रणव पारीख यांनी सांगितले.

Fourth generation in mango business

With about a hundred years in Mango business in her family, Medha Vaidya from fourth generation is successfully taking their business ahead by giving Punekars a treat of their favorite fruit every year. Little did the family knew that their mangos will be supplied to Kolhapur, Pune, Sangli and New Mumbai when her great grandfather actually bought 5000 mango trees in Konkan. Around 100 years before, her great grandfather started the mango business in and around Konkan and with more generations in future, their farm mango is now loved by most of the people in Maharashtra. Talking about food business, Medha said, “When I shifted to Pune after marriage, I decided to expand our family business here in Pune also. For the first few years I started with mouth publicity and home delivery and now since eight years, I am professionally working as an entrepreneur and taking ahead my family business.” Known as Greenky Mangoes, Medha has been successfully working in this field not only during the mango season, but has also initiated various food products. Right from Solkadhi to mango pulp and other products famous in Konkan region, she supplies all these products in entire Pune for more than 40 shops and dealers. Fresh from the farm of Ril village in Ratnagiri district, the mangoes are naturally grown without any added chemicals. Talking about her work Medha said, “I use to work before in a private company, but later on I thought that why not take this family business ahead and support my brother who is also in the same business. It is then, that I decided to take this as a full-time work and I enjoy every bit of it. As mango is a fruit which is loved by all, I feel happy in sharing this happiness among people.” Gudhi Padwa being the Maharashtrian New Year, mango has quintessential importance on this day and is considered auspicious to be bought on this day. Talking about this ritual Medha said, “It is believed to be auspicious by Maharashtrians to buy mangoes on Gudhi Padwa, therefore we usually start our season few days before of Padwa and we have many people buying the best fruit on this day as one is emotionally attached to this fruit. Aamras a delicacy made from mango is also prepared on this day.”
