India’s First Car Ferry Train by Konkan Railway: A New Era of Comfortable Travel from Maharashtra to Goa
Imagine skipping the long, tiring, and traffic-heavy road journey to Goa, yet arriving with your own car ready to explore the beaches and towns as soon as you get off the train. That dream is now a reality, thanks to Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL), which is launching India’s first-ever car ferry train service a groundbreaking solution that combines the comfort of rail travel with the convenience of carrying your personal vehicle. This new service will run between Kolad in Maharashtra and Verna in Goa, perfectly timed for the upcoming Ganesh Chaturthi season, when thousands of families travel from Mumbai, Pune, and nearby regions to celebrate in Goa.Why This Service is a Game-ChangerTravelling from Maharashtra to Goa during holidays can be exhausting. The scenic but winding roads and heavy traffic during festivals often stretch travel time to 20-22 hours. Add to that the fatigue of driving for hours, and the trip can feel more stressful than joyful. But now, with this car ferry train, the journey will take just 12 hours without the stress of driving. Travellers can relax in passenger coaches while their cars are safely secured on specially designed wagons. It’s not just about saving time it’s about making travel easier, safer, and more enjoyable, especially for families, senior citizens, and road trip lovers. How the Car Ferry Train WorksThe new car ferry train service between Kolad in Maharashtra and Verna in Goa is designed to make travel easier and more comfortable. The train leaves Kolad at 5:00 PM and reaches Verna by 5:00 AM the next morning. Passengers must arrive at Kolad station by 2:00 PM to load their vehicles and complete all boarding formalities. The train has 20 specially made wagons, and each wagon can carry two cars, allowing a total of 40 cars per trip. However, the train will only run if at least 16 cars are booked in advance. During the journey, cars are securely fastened using belts, and their handbrakes must be applied. For safety, passengers are not allowed to stay in their cars while the train is moving. Instead, they can travel comfortably in nearby passenger coaches. Each car can have up to three people: two in the 3AC coach (₹935 per person) and one in the SLR coach or second seating (₹190 per person). The cost to transport one car is ₹7,875 for a one-way trip. This setup is ideal for families or small groups who want to travel with their own vehicle without the stress of a long road journey.A Green, Smart, and Family-Friendly SolutionThis new train service is not just about comfort; it’s also a step toward eco-friendly travel. By transporting vehicles via train instead of driving them, fuel consumption is significantly reduced. This helps lower carbon emissions and decongests the heavily crowded highways, especially during holiday rushes like Ganeshotsav. Families that used to dread the long road trips can now look forward to a peaceful overnight train ride, waking up refreshed and ready to explore Goa with their own car already waiting. For many families, travelling to Goa during Ganesh Chaturthi or summer holidays is a yearly tradition. But long hours behind the wheel, roadside breakdowns, and unpredictable delays have often made the journey less enjoyable. With this new car ferry service, the focus shifts back to what really matters: togetherness, convenience, and joyful travel. Parents can rest, children can be comfortable, and everyone arrives safely. It brings a touch of magic back to the road trip, without the road. For senior citizens, too, this service means less strain and more ease, allowing them to visit their hometowns or vacation spots in comfort.A Visionary Move by Konkan RailwayThe Konkan Railway Corporation Limited deserves applause for this innovative, people-first service. Using railway infrastructure to serve private car owners is a bold and visionary idea that’s been carefully timed for India’s busy travel seasons. It’s not just a technical success; it’s a human success, showing how transport systems can evolve to meet modern needs. KRCL has also stated that if this pilot route proves successful, more such services could be launched across India, especially on high-traffic routes that combine tourism and long-distance travel. With the launch of India’s first car ferry train, a new chapter in Indian travel has begun, one that values time, safety, sustainability, and the human need for comfort and connection. It blends the freedom of road trips with the ease of rail travel and promises to transform how we think about long-distance journeys.
