This electrochemical reaction produces electricity, which powers the train's traction motors. Remarkably, the only direct by-products are water vapour and heat, eliminating smoke, combustion and carbon emissions.According to a report in The Times of India, the train consists of two hydrogen-powered driving cars and eight trailer coaches. Construction of the much-awaited Jogeshwari Terminus is progressing steadily, with officials confirming that nearly 55 per cent of the work has already been completed.Slated to open by January 2027, the new facility will become Western Railway’s latest hub for long-distance train operations and the city’s first entirely new railway terminus in 34 years. The project is expected to ease congestion at some of Mumbai’s busiest stations while boosting operational efficiency across the network.According to Western Railway General Manager Ram Shray Pandey, the project is set to be completed by January 27 and thereafter, passenger services will begin immediately.A Major Boost for Long-Distance TravelOnce operational, Jogeshwari Terminus will provide dedicated infrastructure for the arrival, parking, maintenance and departure of long-distance trains.The station will be capable of handling up to 12 Mail and Express trains with 24 coaches each every day, significantly increasing Western Railway’s capacity. This dedicated setup is expected to improve train punctuality and streamline operations, reducing delays caused by congestion at existing terminals.The project has undergone several upgrades since its inception. Initially planned with three platforms, the design was revised to include four platforms, allowing the station to accommodate more passengers and support future expansion. The fourth platform will function as a home platform, while the lengths of the other platforms have been extended to cater to longer trains. Passenger comfort has also been a priority. Platform widths have been increased from nine metres to twelve metres, ensuring smoother movement and improved safety, especially during peak travel periods.Relief for Mumbai’s Crowded StationsFor millions of commuters and long-distance travellers, the new terminus promises a welcome respite. Major stations such as Mumbai Central, Bandra Terminus, Dadar, Andheri and Borivali often face severe crowding as suburban and long-distance passengers share the same infrastructure.Jogeshwari Terminus is expected to redistribute train traffic, helping reduce congestion and improving the overall passenger experience. The move will also allow existing stations to operate more efficiently.Seamless Connectivity Across the CityStrategically located near Ram Mandir railway station and just 250 metres from Jogeshwari Metro Station, the terminus will offer excellent multimodal connectivity. Almost Fully Electric! Indian Railways Nears Historic 100% Electrification Milestone

India has achieved a landmark feat in its railway modernization journey. The country has successfully electrified 99.6 per cent of its Broad Gauge railway network, bringing one of the world's largest transportation systems to the brink of complete electrification.As of May 31, 2026, electrification work has been completed across 70,002 route kilometres of the total 70,271 route kilometre Broad Gauge network. With only 269 kilometres remaining, India is closer than ever to achieving a fully electrified railway system. The achievement places Indian Railways ahead of several major rail networks globally, including those in the European Union, the United Kingdom and the United States.From 20% to 99.6%: A Decade of Remarkable GrowthThe scale of progress is staggering. In 2014, only about 21,801 route kilometres of railway lines were electrified, accounting for roughly 20 per cent of the Broad Gauge network. Today, that figure has surged to more than 69,873 route kilometres, representing one of the fastest large-scale railway electrification drives anywhere in the world.The transformation reflects a strategic shift toward cleaner and more efficient transportation. By reducing dependence on diesel locomotives, Indian Railways has significantly lowered fuel consumption while improving operational performance.The impact has been substantial. During 2024-25 alone, railway electrification helped save nearly ₹6,000 crore in fuel costs and reduced diesel consumption by approximately 180 crore litres.Powering the World's Busiest Rail NetworksIndian Railways remains the backbone of the nation's transportation system. Every day, nearly 25,000 trains operate across the network, connecting cities, towns and villages from Kashmir to Kanyakumari. The scale is reflected in passenger numbers as well. During 2025-26, Indian Railways carried a record 741 crore passengers, highlighting its central role in India's economic and social life.Modernisation efforts have gone far beyond electrification. Over 54,600 kilometres of railway tracks have been renewed, while premium services such as Vande Bharat and Amrit Bharat trains continue expanding across the country. The Union Budget 2026-27 has further accelerated this momentum, allocating a record ₹2.78 lakh crore for railway infrastructure development, including plans for seven new high-speed rail corridors.Technology Driving a Safer FutureThe modernization story is also one of technological innovation. Indian Railways has been integrating cutting-edge systems to improve safety, efficiency and passenger experience. Passengers traveling from Kochi to Bengaluru have reason to celebrate. Starting July 31, Indian Railways has launched its third Vande Bharat train for Kerala. This fast train will operate on the Ernakulam–Bengaluru route three times a week. Riders can expect a smooth and enjoyable journey on the Vande Bharat train. In February 2019, India took a big step forward in rail technology by rolling out indigenous semi-high-speed trains. These trains first called Train 18 during production, got the name Vande Bharat Express when they hit the tracks. Vande Bharat trains can reach top speeds of 180 km/h but often run at 130 km/h because of track limits. They can hit top speed on certain parts of each route. This means that even though the trains can speed up and slow down, they don't average very high speeds overall. Indian Railways reached another milestone on February 20 as Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the longest transportation tunnel in India, christened ‘T-50,’ on the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL). As the first electrified trains of the Kashmir valley embarked on their inaugural journey, a new chapter unfolded in India's rail infrastructure. Two electrified trains embarked on their maiden journeys, one from Srinagar to Sangaldan and the other in the reverse direction, setting the wheels of progress in motion. In his address, Prime Minister Modi articulated a vision beyond boundaries, envisioning a day when a train journey from Kashmir to Kanyakumari would be a reality. The T-50 tunnel, spanning 12.77 kilometers, nestled between the Khari-Sumber section, was not only inaugurated but also the 48.1-kilometer Banihal-Khari-Sumber-Sangaldan section, further expanding the reach of the USBRL. The T-50 tunnel is one of the most formidable engineering feats of the USBRL project. Commencing its survey in 1996, the tunnel saw the light of operationalization only in 2013. Safety remained paramount, with meticulous planning evident in the construction of an escape tunnel running parallel to T-50, equipped with connecting passages every 375 meters for swift evacuation during emergencies. The provision of water pipes along the tunnel's length showcased a proactive approach towards fire safety. The narrative extended to T-49, India's longest escape tunnel, which achieved a breakthrough in December 2022. Stretching 12.895 kilometers between Sumber and Khari stations, T-49 epitomized innovation and meticulous engineering. It all started with a small stretch of 34 km between Mumbai and Thane, where the first passenger train in Asia operated. This giant leap for public transportation has propelled the country's progress and prosperity over the next 17 decades. The inaugural train was flagged off from Boribunder station, where the majestic UNESCO World Heritage Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus now stands. Fourteen new wooden carriages, filled with 400 excited and nervous guests, chugged into the historic journey at 3.35 p.m. that day, accompanied by a resounding 21-gun salute, thunderous cheers, and claps. Three inexplicably named engines, "Sahib," "Sindh," and "Sultan," pulled the first passenger service. They blew loud whistles, belched out dense smoke and steam, and shortly chugged into the historic voyage at 3.35 p.m. Since then, the Indian Railways have advanced significantly, now operating a network of over 108,000 km of running lines and carrying people, animals, and cargo to some of the most remote regions of the nation. According to official data till 2022, the trains have been electrified to an extent of 80%, providing a less expensive, more environmentally friendly, and faster option. The Indian Railways is the largest rail network in Asia and the world's second-largest under one management. The railways run close to 13,523 passenger trains and 9,146 freight trains daily on its network, connecting millions of people across the vast sub-continent. Records Broken as India Unveils the World's Longest Railway Platform!

The Indian Railways has created a historic milestone by securing a place in the Guinness Book of World Records for having the longest railway platform globally. This recognition has been earned by the newly constructed platform No. 8 at Hubballi station in Karnataka, which measures a remarkable 1507 meters in length. The achievement is a source of immense pride for both Indian Railways and the Hubballi-Dharwad region, as it signifies their ability to meet the future transportation needs of the city. The construction of the Hubballi station, which cost Rs 20.1 crore, was part of the remodeling of the Hubballi yard. The remodeling was commissioned with electronic interlocking in February 2021, which addressed the need to hold and run additional trains in the future. The new platform has also eliminated the bottleneck caused by single-line working towards Gadag, Davangere, and Londa. Now, express trains can enter and exit the station without any detention, saving time for passengers. In addition to the existing five platforms, three new platforms have been added to the station, making it more efficient and enhancing its operational capacity. Two trains can now be started in two directions simultaneously from the longest platform, further improving the station's efficiency. The South Western Railway zone has also completed the electrification of the Hosapete - Hubballi - Tinaighat Railway line at a cost of Rs. 519 crores. This Cartoon Character Is a Must-See for All

The Indian Railways has come out with an interesting medium to educate people about safety during rail travel. It has released an animated short film titled “Gappu Bhaiya Bade Mahan, Laparvahi Inki Pahchan” through which people are encouraged to follow all safety norms for a safe and enjoyable train journey. The North Central Railway (NCR) zone released the animated short film containing critical warnings and precautions and published the link on Twitter. Important Instructions The animated video conveys some important warnings and safety instructions for passengers. These include abstaining from carrying inflammable items in the train and not taking food items from strangers. It dissuades passengers from leaning out of trains and crossing railway tracks. Passengers are informed not to touch unattended items and inform about them to railway officials. Boarding and deboarding from moving trains and taking a selfie on railway tracks are strictly prohibited. Passengers are also forbidden from climbing on the roof of trains as it could lead to electrocution. Interesting Medium While making announcements or using print media to inform passengers about safety may not have been very effective, this video is certain to make an impact on passengers due to its comical and interesting content. Know More About the Country’s First Private Train ‘Tejas’

India’s first ‘private’ train run by IRCTC has started it’s commercial operations when it was flagged off from Lucknow by UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in the first week of October. The Lucknow – Delhi train will be the fastest on this route as it will reach Delhi 25 minutes earlier than Shatabdi which was until now the fastest train on this route. New Features The new IRCTC Tejas has a plane like feel with hospitable crew members, food, push-button feature in seats and infotainment service. The train has tea and coffee vending machines. One novel feature is the introduction of ramps so as to bridge the gap between the train and the platform facilitating passengers to alight easily. It is the first train to pay for any delay on an hourly basis. Passengers will also be provided with free insurance of Rs 25 lakhs. Number of Stops and Frequency The Tejas Express will have only two halts- Kanpur and Ghaziabad. The timings are so convenient that one can reach Delhi in the afternoon and return to Lucknow on the same day. It will run on all days of the week except Tuesday. With the success of this train, the Railways intend to hand over more of its operations to IRCTC and make way for private operators to run trains in India.

Indian Railways to Handover Operations to Private Players on Key Routes

The Indian Railway board is holding discussions to allow private players to control more trains on key routes. Talks include the decision to hand over operations of more trains on important routes with better services and amenities for passengers. The Indian Railways has earlier decided to grant operations of two of its luxurious Tejas Express trains to Indian Rail Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) between Lucknow-New Delhi and Mumbai-Ahmedabad. Meeting Of Railway officials The national transporter called a meeting on September 27 to discuss about the introduction of private operations of passenger trains to provide world-class services. Principal Executive Director of Coaching of the Railway Board, A. Madhusudan Reddy said that through a participative bid process, private operators would be identified to run private passenger day or overnight trains connecting important cities. It was also necessary to identify the routes and the number of services that can be run. Modern passenger trains would be inducted to operate on paths allocated to them on payment of haulage charges by private operators. Proposed Routes The Railways have identified certain key routes where private operators can ply the trains. They include long-distance or overnight journey trains on the routes of Delhi-Mumbai, Delhi-Lucknow, Delhi-Jammu/Katra, Delhi-Howrah, Secunderabad-Hyderabad, Secunderabad-Delhi, Delhi-Chennai, Mumbai-Chennai, Howrah-Chennai and Howrah-Mumbai. With the introduction of private operators to run trains, passengers can now expect world-class services and amenities.

A Gift to Vaishnodevi Pilgrims As Railways Start Services of the New Vande Bharat Express

It's Navratri time and there is good news for Vaishnodevi pilgrims as Railways have begun operations of the second Vande Bharat Express train which will ply New Delhi and Katra in Jammu and Kashmir during the Navratri festival. Gift To Pilgrims Speaking to Asian News International (ANI), the Chairman of the Railway Board, Vinod Kumar Yadav said that the Delhi-Katra Vande Bharat Express would be a gift to the pilgrims who visit Vaishno Devi and it will begin plying from Navratras. The Railways are trying to upgrade their busy routes. He further said that Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Howrah will be ready by December 2021. Vande Bharat Express This is the second Vande Bharat Express launched in India. According to Yadav, the Indian railways would have 40 Vande Bharat Express trains plying on its network across the nation by 2022. Out of the 40 trains, 15 trains will be launched next year while the remaining 25 will be launched in 2021. The new Vande Bharat train will be fitted with sleeper coaches which is not present in the existing Vande Bharat train also called train 18. Additional Features Apart from the plush interiors, the Delhi - Katra Vande Bharat Express is equipped with wi-fi, bio vacuum toilets, GPS based infotainment system, CCTV surveillance among other features. It also has plastic bottle crusher machines, a spacious pantry with ROs, one deep freezer for storing ice cream and welcome drinks as well as three hot cases and two bottle coolers. Food waste-not in good taste. We have heard and read many contents about how not to waste food and now Indian Railways have come up with this great idea to reduce food wastage. It has installed a public refrigerator at Hubballi railway station in Karnataka. Who Can Keep Food A majority of passengers travelling by train carry food parcels with them and many a time, food is left over at the end of the journey. Passengers can now deposit this extra food in the public refrigerator at the railway station so that the hungry and poor can avail themselves of it. The Railways have also requested the staff of food plaza located at Hubballi railway station to supply excess food items to the refrigerator. It has also put up a notice dissuading passengers from keeping non-vegetarian items or eatables that are likely to become stale. The Public Refrigerator The refrigerator that costs around Rs 80,000 is six foot tall with four racks. Two racks are used for keeping cooked food while the other two racks are for fruits and vegetables. Anyone who is hungry, including senior citizens, sick and divyangjan passengers can partake of the food inside it. This great initiative was launched on 15th August 2019 and has become a big success. At a time when many poor people in our country are unable to afford good food, this initiative by the Indian Railways is really commendable.

This Retired Airman Donated His Entire Savings To Defence Ministry

People generally wish to live the rest of their life for themselves once they get done with all the responsibilities. But retired airman, CBR Prasad thinks the other way around. For him, serving the society should be your utmost priority once you fulfil each and every need of your family. The ex-airman worked for the Indian Air Force for nine years but later quit the job because Indian Railways gave him a better offer. However, he did not get the job afterwards so, he came up with a poultry farm which flourished. As reported by ANI. Once Prasad fulfilled every responsibility of his family, he gave back all his savings to the defence which is an amount of Rs 1.08 crore. He met Defence Minister, Rajnath Singh on Monday and gave him the cheque. Prasad dreamt of bagging an Olympic medal someday but, unfortunately, it didn’t turn into a reality. So he thought of doing something for the children. He came up with a sports university sort of campus on 50 acres of land and now he is building another one. He has been training children for 20 years. While talking about why one should give back to the society, Prasad told ANI: "You should not take back anything because you did not get anything while coming. Give that minimum needed to your family and the rest to the society and rest of the life work for the society.” Prasad worked throughout his life and not even once did he think of spending his hard-earned money on himself. Now Save 6 to 8 Hours While Travelling From Bengaluru to New Delhi

A good news for the people travelling from Bangaluru to Delhi. Yesterday in Karnataka Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveils Bidar to Kalaburgi railway line, which will actually reduce the travelling distance from Bengaluru to New Delhi resulting to 6 to 8 hours of reduction in travelling time. PM flagged off the first train on the new track from Bidar to Kalaburgi station. Railway Minister Piyush Goel, Governor Vajubhai R Vala, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Union Ministers from the state Ananth Kumar and Sadananda Gowda were also present on the occasion. It took 16 years to complete the project. The foundation stone for the project was laid down in 1996 but the actual construction began only in 2000 and then finally it got completed and the commuters were happy to see the Diesel-Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) train which will cover the 110km between Bidar and Kalaburgi in two hours with brief halts at 12 stations in between. The new track will give direct connectivity from Bengaluru to Bidar which is 690 km away from New Delhi and in less time.

Indian Railways to be Safer

Railway Minister Piyush Goyal expressed his concerns about safety in Indian Railways and said that making rail travel safer is a very pressing and urgent need. He was speaking at an event in New Delhi where he informed that ISRO, Rail Tech & Indian Railways are looking to work together to see how space technology can be used to make travel safer. The safety of passengers is of paramount importance and to achieve that he announced a slew of measures. These include installation of CCTV cameras in coaches and stations for enhanced security. He also said that all RPF and TTEs on duty should be in proper uniform while on duty to bring transparency. Goyal stated that 30-35 percent accidents occur at unmanned level crossings due to which it was decided that all unmanned level crossings will be removed within a year. Earlier the target for removal of unmanned crossings was set for three years. He said that around 5,000 unmanned level crossings need to be removed in the next one year. The minister is leaving no stone unturned to ensure maximum safety in rail travel. On September 7, he had chaired a high-level meeting with top Railway Board officials on train safety in New Delhi.

Ahmedabad to Bihar, a train full of Gandhi Knowledge

This year will see the commemoration of 100 years of Sabarmati Ashram and Champaran Satyagrah. Both these have a close link with Mahatma Gandhi. To observe its importance Indian Railways will start a special train for tourists having historical importance. Starting from Ahmedabad, this 10-days train journey will travel to Bihar covering various destinations having historical significance. The train is scheduled to depart on June 17 and return on June 26. This train will connect two cities having importance over its link to Mahatma Gandhi. As per a report published in Financial Express, V N Shukla, deputy general manager (tourism), IRCTC said, “June 17 marks 100 years of both Sabarmati Ashram in the city as well as of Champaran Satyagrah in Bihar. Thus, IRCTC has decided to run a train, officially called Astha Special Tourist Train or Gandhi Darshan Train, on June 17. It will be flagged off from Sabarmati station at 8.00 am. The train, having only non-AC sleeper coaches, has the capacity to accommodate 840 passengers. The fare, which will be inclusive of all, has been kept at INR 8,720 per person.” This train will cover various historical places like Wardha, Motihari, Gaya, Varanasi Allahabad. IRCTC is also planning to run this train on regular basis.

Printed version not mandatory, railways will also accept e-Aadhaar as identity proof

Earlier only the hard copy or printed version of Aadhaar card was valid. On request from passengers, the government will now accept e-Aadhaar as proof for travelling through reserved classes. The decision was passed after final approval from the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). As per Section 4(3) of Aadhaar Act, 2016, a physical or electronic form of the Aadhaar number subject to authentication and other conditions, can be accepted as proof of identity of the Aadhaar card holder for any work. Thus, in accordance with the above Act, Railway has made downloaded Aadhaar cards valid as an identity proof. Until now there are ten documents accepted by the railway as an identity proof for travelers travelling in reserved classes. While printed Aadhaar card was one of them, downloaded weren’t considered as valid. Now they are made valid and considered at par with the printed ones as an identity proof. An official order passed by the railway said, “In view of the above, it has been decided to incorporate downloaded Aadhaar (e-Aadhaar) also as prescribed proof of identity at par with printed Aahaar card in the list of prescribed proofs of identity which are valid for undertaking the journey in any reserved class.”

You can transfer your railway ticket now to someone else

Passengers holding confirmed railways tickets can transfer it to another person. This change is implemented in some important stations. A notice by Indian Railways passenger reservation inquiry stated that Chief Reservation Supervisor of important stations is permitted by Railway Administration to change the name of a passenger having a seat confirmed under his name. However, the change in the name of the ticket will be done only once. Government servants, marriage parties, students, family members and National Cadet Corp (NCC) students would be allowed to avail this facility. To avail the facility, a government servant must submit the request in writing 24 hours prior the departure time of the train. In the case of family members, if a person has to change the name of his ticket to one of his family members- husband, wife, father, mother, brother, sister, son or daughter; he too has to submit a request in writing 24 hours prior to the scheduled departure of the train. If a passenger is a student of a recognized institute and wants to transfer ticket of one student onto the name of another student of the same institute, a request for the same must be made in writing 48 hours prior the scheduled train departure. Also if a group of passengers is attending marriage event and if their head makes a transfer request, it must in written 48 hours prior to the scheduled departure. Also the same applies to the group of cadets of NCC, but the request can be made in written 24 hours prior the train departure schedule. If the applicants are in a group like those of students, marriage event attendees and cadets of NCC, the transfer request for only 10 percent of the group members will be accepted.

Indian Railways tackle climate change through bio toilets, solar panels and more

The Indian government stands by the Paris accord and is all set to reduce its carbon footprint. As the Indian Railways is the largest rail network in the world and consumes gigantic amounts of electricity, Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu said that it is necessary to identify a cost effective energy system with least environmental impact. Consequently, the government has planned to derive 500 MW of solar power by roof top solar installations on railway stations, administrative buildings and vacant land. Around 7,000 stations have been chosen for solar panels and excess solar energy will be sold to local business and residents. Indian Railways also intends to equip all its trains with bio-toilets. Over the years, it has partnered with Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) to develop environment-friendly bio-toilets for its passenger coaches where human waste accumulates in tanks below the toilets which is then treated and decomposed by a consortium of bacteria, as opposed to being released directly onto the tracks. So far, it has 49,000 bio-toilets in over 900 operational trains across India. The Railways also use environmentally friendly composite sleepers made of recycled plastic waste which is placed over all girder bridges to collect rainwater, that can be later used for maintenance of wagons/coaches and cleaning of stations. Supporting the afforestation drive, the Indian Railways has announced the target of planting a total of 5 crore trees along the track and rail land across the country.

Soon, radio-frequency tags to track coaches and wagons of Indian Railways

The Indian Railways plans to implement use of information technology to keep track of it’s inventory of locomotives, coaches and wagons. It is planning to make use of radio-frequency identification tags (RFID) for this purpose. Indian Railways possesses about 9,000 locomotives, 50,000 coaches and 2.25 lakh wagons. Radio-frequency identification tags will be designed by the Centre for Railway Information System (CRIS). These tags are estimated to cost Rs 1000 per piece. The first phase of new system has got allocation of Rs 57 crore from the Railways. Use of RFID devices would enable the Railways not only to keep location track of inventory, but also make optimum use of these assets. This will also eliminate the errors caused by present manual system. Each moving coach and wagon will be identified and its movement will be tracked by RFID tag traced by trackside readers. These trackside readers would be installed at stations and other key points on the tracks, and will have capacity to read a tag from a distance of about two meters. Reading of a wagon identity tag taken thus will be transmitted on the network to a central computer server. RFID system has been implemented as a pilot project on the Vishakhapatnam-Talcher-Paradeep section with a good result. The RFID is expected to resolve the issue of shortage of locomotives, coaches and wagons in a more expeditious and transparent manner, opined a senior Railway Ministry official, according to Times of India report.

Indian Railways to undergo complete digitisation

Indian Railways is creating a common digital platform for assimilating the information of all the departments to increase transparency in the system and to save Rs.60,000 crore of expenditure. Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu told the Press Trust of India that the entire supply chain is being digitised. Also the payments will be done electronically which will curb corruption. They are implementing enterprise resource planning that will make all rail operations online.It is an IT- based system for overall integration and planning. The main aim behind this is to handle the major issues railways are summoned to on daily basis. Digitisation will make the information centralised. Railways has sanctioned for doubling and tripling of the network for about 16,500km. They also want to head towards solarisation. About 40 percent of the current railway lines are electrically run. Railway envisions to save Rs.41,000 crore in the energy bill by producing amount 1000MW of the solar power. Centralising will further help as it will lead to proper utilisation of railway routes and network and avoid jams. Currently, 60 percent of railway traffic runs on 16 percent of the system. This leads to congestions and delays in train travel.

While traveling with my family on vacation, we stopped at Navapur Railway Station. Tired from the journey, I sat down on a simple wooden bench at the platform. My parents and siblings sat beside me, but then my father chuckled and said, “Do you realize you are sitting in Gujarat while the rest of us are in Maharashtra?” I looked down and noticed a line running right through the middle of the bench. That was the moment I discovered the fascinating story of Navapur Railway Station, a station that literally belongs to two different states.India is a land of diversity, not just in people, culture, or food, but sometimes even in its railway stations. Among the thousands of stations in the country, Navapur Railway Station is one of a kind. Situated in the Nandurbar district of Maharashtra and the Tapi district of Gujarat, this station is divided almost perfectly between the two states. Out of its total 800-meter length, 500 meters lie in Gujarat, while the remaining 300 meters are in Maharashtra. What makes it even more special is that trains stopping here often stand half in Maharashtra and half in Gujarat. A person boarding from the first compartment could technically be in Gujarat, while another in the last compartment could be in Maharashtra.A Bench that Became FamousThe uniqueness of Navapur is symbolized by a simple wooden bench on its platform. This bench is divided by a painted line that marks the state border. Half of the bench lies in Maharashtra, and the other half in Gujarat. This has turned the bench into a selfie hotspot. Families often sit on either side to click photos, humorously boasting about being “in two states at once.” The sight of people laughing and enjoying this little quirk has added a human charm to what might otherwise be just another small-town railway station.How Did This Happen? Instead of shifting the tracks or re-locating the station, authorities decided to keep it as it was. Since then, Navapur has stood as a reminder of how historical decisions can shape the everyday geography of places.Announcements in Four LanguagesIf the physical division wasn’t enough, the cultural and linguistic blend at Navapur makes it even more fascinating. Announcements at the station are made in four languages Hindi, English, Marathi, and Gujarati. This reflects the multilingual character of the border region, where people from both states interact daily. The ticket counter and police station are on the Maharashtra side, while the station master’s office, waiting room, and washrooms are on the Gujarat side. This means passengers constantly move between two state jurisdictions without even realizing it.Laws That Change Across the BenchAnother intriguing aspect of Navapur is how different state laws apply on either side of the same platform. For example, alcohol is prohibited in Gujarat, while in Maharashtra, its sale and consumption are legal. On the other hand, Maharashtra bans products like gutka and pan masala, which Gujarat allows. So, technically, a person sitting on one side of the famous bench might be in a state where liquor is banned, while on the other side, gutka is illegal. This contrast often sparks curiosity and laughter among visitors, making Navapur a talking point far beyond railway circles. For travelers, Navapur is more than just a station; it is a metaphor.
