A New Safety Shield for Trains: KAVACH 4.0 Introduced on South Central Railway

Indian Railways has taken another step towards safer train journeys with the commissioning of KAVACH Version 4.0 for the first time on the South Central Railway (SCR).The upgraded system has been commissioned across 108 Route Kilometres on the Malkajgiri–Kamareddi section of Hyderabad Division, marking an important advancement in the country’s indigenous Automatic Train Protection (ATP) technology.The upgrade replaces KAVACH Version 3.2 and brings improvements aimed at making train operations safer, more reliable and technologically advanced.From Version 3.2 to 4.0The latest upgrade builds on the experience gained from deploying KAVACH 3.2 across more than 1,465 kilometres on South Central Railway. KAVACH 4.0 has been developed and tested to address the varied operational and technological requirements of India's vast railway network.One of its notable improvements is increased location accuracy, allowing the system to determine a train's position more precisely. It also provides improved information about signal aspects in larger railway yards, helping strengthen situational awareness for train crews.These upgrades can be particularly important in complex railway environments where multiple tracks, signals and movements require precise coordination.Technology That Can Act When NeededKAVACH is an indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection system designed to support loco pilots and enhance operational safety. The system helps trains remain within prescribed speed limits and can automatically apply brakes when necessary if the loco pilot fails to respond appropriately.It is designed to help prevent Signal Passing at Danger (SPAD), control train speeds during critical situations and reduce the possibility of collisions. The technology can also support safer train operations during challenging weather conditions when visibility may be affected.KAVACH 4.0 also brings improvements in the way different railway systems communicate with each other. The upgraded system features a station-to-station KAVACH interface through Optical Fibre Cable (OFC), enabling enhanced communication and integration. It can also directly interface with existing Electronic Interlocking Systems, allowing KAVACH to work more closely with the railway's signalling infrastructure.A Step Towards Safer Rail TravelThe commissioning of KAVACH 4.0 represents another milestone in India's efforts to strengthen railway safety through indigenous technology.As the system expands across the network, its improved positioning, signalling information, communication and automatic braking capabilities can add another layer of protection to India's massive railway operations.
