50 States, One Dream: Malayali Techie Nisha Kolattukudy’s Inspiring Run Across America Before 50
As the sun rose over the scenic coastline of Hawaii, Nisha Kolattukudy approached the finish line of her final half-marathon with a mix of exhaustion and quiet triumph. It was more than just another race—it was the culmination of a decade-long dream. With that final step, she completed an extraordinary journey of running half-marathons in all 50 US states, achieving her goal well before her 50th birthday. For Nisha, a Malayali tech professional originally from Ernakulam and raised in Puducherry, the moment was surreal. It was a reminder that even the most ambitious dreams can be realised with persistence and belief.A Late Start That Changed EverythingNisha’s journey into long-distance running did not begin early. During her school and college years, her only exposure to athletics came through sprint events. After moving to the United States in the early 2000s following her marriage, life became a balancing act between work, family, and responsibilities. Running was far from her mind until 2012, when a simple interaction changed everything. Her Japanese neighbour, Carolyn Yatsu, would go out for runs every morning. Curious and inspired, Nisha asked if she could join her. That decision marked the beginning of a transformation. The first run was not easy. After nearly 15 years away from any form of serious physical activity, even short distances felt challenging. But Nisha persisted, waking up at 5 am each day, gradually building her stamina and confidence. From Small Steps to Big GoalsWhat began as short morning runs soon evolved into participation in 5K and 10K races. There were no medals in the beginning, but there was something far more valuable self-belief. These early experiences made her realise that she was capable of more than she had ever imagined. Living in Oregon, she began participating in local marathons, finding her rhythm and passion for long-distance running. It was during this phase that a bold idea took shape: to run a half-marathon in all 50 states. At first, it seemed like a distant dream, something she might attempt after retirement. Balancing a demanding career and raising two children left little room for such an ambitious pursuit. But encouragement from Carolyn changed her perspective. She urged Nisha not to wait, reminding her that time and health are never guaranteed. The Journey Across States BeginsIn 2016, Nisha officially began her quest, starting with a half-marathon in Oregon, followed by Washington. Each race brought new challenges, new environments, and new lessons. Determined to continue, she searched for opportunities to run in multiple states efficiently. This led her to organised marathon groups that conducted races across several states in a short span. One such event involved running in five states in five days, a gruelling test of endurance that she successfully completed in 2019 during a Gulf Coast series. By the end of that year, she had completed races in 10 states. Her journey was gaining momentum.Challenges That Tested Her SpiritJust as her dream was taking shape, the pandemic brought everything to a halt. For nearly two and a half years, races were cancelled, and travel became impossible. For many, this would have been a breaking point. But Nisha chose to keep going. She continued training in her neighbourhood, sometimes even running in her backyard. It was not about races anymore—it was about discipline and staying committed to her goal. When events resumed in 2022, returning to peak performance was not easy. But with the support of her husband, Viju Kolattukudy, she regained her rhythm. Together, they travelled across states, often covering multiple races in consecutive days. The Final Stretch to 50By 2022, Nisha had significantly expanded her tally, adding eight more states. Over the next few years, she continued her journey with determination, overcoming injuries, fatigue, and moments of doubt. By the end of 2025, she had completed 49 states. The final milestone came on April 12 in Hawaii, where she completed her 50th half-marathon. Crossing that finish line was not just a physical achievement it was an emotional moment filled with gratitude, pride, and a deep sense of fulfilment. She had done what once seemed impossible.Looking Beyond the Finish LineEven after achieving such a remarkable milestone, Nisha is not stopping. Her next goal is even more ambitious to run across all seven continents. While she is still exploring the feasibility, her determination remains unchanged. For now, her routine continues as it always has early morning runs, steady training, and a mindset focused on growth. Nisha Kolattukudy’s story is a powerful reminder that it is never too late to chase a dream. Her journey across 50 states is not just a record it is a celebration of resilience, discipline, and the courage to begin. In every step she took, she proved that limits are often self-imposed. And as she looks ahead to new horizons, her story continues to inspire showing that sometimes, the finish line is just the beginning of another dream.
