Jodhpur Goes Electric: First E-Buses Hit the Roads, 125 More on the Way
Jodhpur’s roads are getting a greener makeover. The Rajasthan city has launched its first electric bus service, beginning with five e-buses and setting the stage for a much larger transformation of its public transport network. The city is expected to receive and deploy 100 to 125 electric buses over the next two to three months, according to the plans announced by the municipal corporation.The move forms part of the wider PM e-Bus Sewa push to bring cleaner, modern public transport to cities across India. The national scheme envisages 10,000 electric buses across 169 cities, with supporting infrastructure for charging and greener urban mobility. From Banar to Jaisalmer BypassJodhpur’s first electric route connects Banar with the Jaisalmer Bypass, covering 16 major stops along the way, including key locations such as Raikabag Bus Stand and MDM Hospital. With a minimum fare of ₹15, the service aims to make cleaner mobility accessible to everyday commuters.And these buses are not just about what powers them. They come equipped with CCTV cameras, digital display boards, fire-safety systems and emergency buttons, while four seats are reserved for women. The result is a public transport experience designed to be cleaner, smarter and more passenger-friendly.Eight Rajasthan Cities Join the Green ShiftJodhpur’s transformation is part of an even larger statewide electric-mobility push.Electric bus operations under the PM e-Bus Sewa initiative are being expanded across Jaipur, Jodhpur, Kota, Bikaner, Ajmer, Udaipur, Bhilwara and Alwar. Rajasthan has been allocated 1,150 e-buses across nine cities under the PM e-Bus Sewa scheme, according to government data. A consortium involving EKA Mobility and Chartered Speed is also deploying electric buses across eight Rajasthan cities, with an order covering hundreds of buses. The rollout is expected to strengthen zero-emission public transport while creating new opportunities in areas such as fleet management, technical maintenance and driving operations.A Greener Journey for the Blue CityFor a city celebrated for its magnificent blue-hued architecture, Jodhpur’s newest colour could be green. Every electric bus replacing a conventional fossil-fuel-powered vehicle represents a step towards cleaner urban mobility and a more sustainable city. The first five buses may seem like a small beginning. But with more than a hundred expected to follow in the coming months, Jodhpur’s electric journey could soon become impossible to miss.
