Delhi to Get Dedicated ‘Pink Force’ for Women’s Safety Across the Capital

Women’s safety is set to receive a sharper focus in Delhi, with Lieutenant Governor T S Sandhu directing Delhi Police to establish a dedicated ‘Pink Force’ of trained women personnel. The proposed unit will carry out high-visibility patrolling around schools, colleges, metro stations, markets and other vulnerable locations across the capital.The force is expected to provide both a visible deterrent and a rapid response, particularly during hours when women and children may be more vulnerable.Inspired by Goa’s Pink ForceSandhu has asked Delhi Police to model the initiative on the Pink Force of Goa Police, which focuses on patrolling and responding to incidents involving women and children.Addressing senior Delhi Police officers at the police headquarters, Sandhu stressed that women’s safety was “non-negotiable.” He also called for stronger foot and motorcycle patrols in crime-prone and high-footfall areas. The proposed Pink Force will work alongside existing policing measures rather than replace them.Building on Existing Women-Led PatrollingDelhi Police has previously deployed women personnel on scooters and beat patrols around educational institutions, markets, metro stations and other public spaces. The new proposal seeks to bring such efforts under a dedicated Pink Force structure, giving women-led patrolling a more organised and visible identity.The move could also help create a stronger sense of accessibility for women and children seeking assistance in public spaces. Sandhu emphasised that every police station should become a place where citizens feel “heard, helped and safe.”Operation Shishtachar to ContinueAlongside the proposed Pink Force, Delhi Police has been asked to continue focused action against eve-teasing and harassment in public spaces under Operation Shishtachar. Patrolling under the operation has already been carried out around educational institutions, markets and transport hubs.The proposed force would therefore add another layer to Delhi’s existing efforts to address harassment and improve safety for woman in public areas.The direction comes amid concerns surrounding the safety of women and minors. With trained women officers visible on the streets and stronger patrolling around vulnerable locations, the proposed Pink Force aims to make safety measures more immediate and accessible.The idea is simple but significant: put a stronger, visible police presence where people need it most.
