These Aren’t Just Jackets: Mumbai Ticket Checkers Get a Smart New Upgrade
Ticket checking on Mumbai’s busy suburban railway network is getting a practical upgrade. The Western Railway (WR) has introduced specially designed jackets for its Ticket Checking (TC) squad personnel, giving them a smarter look while making their demanding duties easier. The jackets have been introduced on a pilot basis, with 30 jackets already procured and distributed among ticket checking staff of the Mumbai division. These are not ordinary jackets. They have been designed around the equipment that ticket checkers use throughout their working day. Dedicated pockets allow staff to securely carry Handheld Terminals (HHTs), Electronic Fare Collection (EFT) machines and voice amplifiers. The jackets also come with a headset arrangement, allowing personnel to access and use their equipment more conveniently and safely. The idea is simple: keep essential devices within easy reach without requiring staff to constantly hold or search for them.Designed for the Busiest HoursThe new jackets could prove especially useful when ticket checking becomes more intensive.According to a report in The Print, Western Railway said they are expected to help during fortress checks, which involve large-scale and high-intensity ticket checking drives, as well as AC local checking, special drives and peak-hour duties. With equipment secured in dedicated pockets, staff can move more freely while continuing to perform checks efficiently. The design also aims to provide greater comfort during long hours on duty.Function Meets a Smart New LookAlong with convenience, the jackets are intended to give ticket checking personnel a more professional appearance. At present, on-duty ticket checking staff of Western Railway generally wear white shirts and black trousers as their standard uniform. The new jackets add a modern layer to this familiar look while serving a clear practical purpose.According to a report in Mid Day, the initiative comes at a time when Western Railway has intensified ticket checking across its network.Between April and September 2026, WR detected 15.49 lakh cases of ticketless and irregular travel, including unbooked luggage, and collected ₹116.52 crore in fines. Intensive checking was carried out across Mumbai suburban local trains, long-distance Mail and Express trains, passenger services and holiday special trains. It may look like a simple change in uniform, but for the staff on the move, it could make every ticket check a little easier.
