India’s Drug Factory in Space? Bhubaneswar Startup Takes Pharma Manufacturing to the Skies
India’s private space sector has a new experiment taking shape far above the ground—and this one could eventually change how some medicines are made.Bhubaneswar-based space-tech startup Serendipity Space has successfully flight-tested a prototype satellite carrying an autonomous pharmaceutical manufacturing system. Called Alchemy, the system is designed to perform crucial steps involved in drug manufacturing under microgravity conditions.The test was conducted using a high-altitude balloon at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) balloon facility in Hyderabad, allowing the company to put its technologies through near-space-like conditions.According to the company, the system operated continuously in harsh conditions, completed its planned processes and then made a controlled return to Earth.Why Make Medicines in Space?The idea may sound futuristic, but scientists have been studying space-based pharmaceutical manufacturing for decades.Microgravity changes how molecules behave and how crystals form. Processes that can be influenced or restricted by gravity on Earth can unfold differently in space, potentially opening new possibilities for drug development and manufacturing.This is one reason pharmaceutical experiments aboard the International Space Station (ISS) have attracted significant scientific interest. Researchers have explored how the unusual environment of space could help create better-quality crystals, understand molecular structures and investigate new approaches to medicine.Serendipity Space wants to take that concept a step further.An Autonomous Factory With No Astronauts NeededUnlike many experiments conducted aboard the ISS, Alchemy is designed to operate autonomously, without requiring continuous human supervision.The company says its dedicated satellite platform is being developed for deployment in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), roughly 400–500 km above Earth. Once operational, the spacecraft could remain in orbit for weeks or even months while carrying out pharmaceutical processes before returning its payload to Earth.The system is also being designed with re-entry capabilities, allowing it to make a controlled landing on either land or water.From Startup to Space in MonthsThe achievement is particularly notable because Serendipity Space began operations only last year. After raising its first round of funding in July 2025, the startup reportedly designed and built its fully functional prototype satellite in less than five months.The successful flight test marks an intriguing step towards a future where space may serve not merely as a destination for scientific experiments, but as a new manufacturing environment for medicines.With Alchemy, India is taking a bold step towards a future where space could become the next frontier of pharmaceutical innovation
