Sepak Takraw Asian Cup 2025: This Isn’t Football or Volleyball. It’s Both—And More!
As a kid, I was always fascinated by sports, and volleyball was one of my favorites. I would watch players spike and block with ease, and I dreamed of being just like them. But what if volleyball could be played in a whole new way? What if you could use your feet, knees, and chest to propel the ball over the net? That's exactly what SepakTakraw is – a sport that combines the thrill of volleyball with the agility and acrobatics of gymnastics. What is SepakTakraw?SepakTakraw is a unique sport that combines elements of football, volleyball, and gymnastics. Played with a rattan or synthetic mesh ball, the objective is to propel the ball over the net using any part of the body except the hands, once the ball is released. This sport demands agility, acrobatics, and teamwork, making it an exciting and challenging game to play. RULES OF SepakTakrawThe rules of SepakTakraw are designed to test players' agility, acrobatics, and teamwork. A SepakTakraw match is played between two teams, each consisting of three players, known as a Regu. The objective is to propel a rattan or synthetic mesh ball over a net using any part of the body except the hands. Once the ball is released, players can use their feet, knees, chest, and head to control and hit the ball. A match typically consists of three sets, with each set played to 15 points. Points are scored when the opposing team fails to return the ball or makes an error. The team with the most points at the end of the three sets wins the match. In addition to the Regu format, SepakTakraw can also be played in other formats, such as Doubles and Quad, with varying numbers of players on each team. The sport requires a high level of physical fitness, coordination, and strategy, making it a challenging and exciting game to play.Origins and Introduction to BiharSepakTakraw originated in Malaysia and was introduced to India in the 1980s. In Bihar, the sport was officially introduced in 1999, with the first international players emerging in 2001. Initially, the sport struggled to gain traction, but with the efforts of pioneers like Ramakant Singh, who trained Karunesh Kumar, one of the state's earliest international players, SepakTakraw began to make its mark in Bihar. Today, SepakTakraw is one of Bihar's 14 priority sports, with over 600 players across the state. The sport has gained significant recognition, particularly after Bihar hosted the International SepakTakraw Federation (ISTAF) World Cup in Patna, where the men's team won gold in one event for the first time. This achievement has not only boosted the sport's popularity but also encouraged more players to take up SepakTakraw as a career option.Government SupportThe Bihar government has been instrumental in promoting SepakTakraw, with initiatives like the 'Medal Lao Naukri Pao' scheme, which offers government jobs to sportspeople winning medals at national and international levels. The state government has also increased its sports budget from ₹30 crore in 2022 to ₹780 crore in 2024, with plans to introduce SepakTakraw in the Eklavya Residential Sports School. Players like Sahil Kumar, 16, and Aarti Kumari, 16, are making waves in the sport. Sahil, a feeder player, has been playing SepakTakraw for seven years and sees a future in the sport. Aarti, who bagged the best player award in the 22nd Junior National SepakTakraw Championship, practices for four to five hours daily and dreams of playing at the international level. These young players are not only passionate about the sport but also driven to succeed, with many coming from financially weaker sections of society. The ASTAF Sepak Takraw Asian Cup 2025 is just around the corner!
