After Nearly Two Centuries, Puducherry’s Iconic Lighthouse Reopens—And There’s More to Explore Than Ever!
For nearly two centuries, it stood tall on Puducherry’s picturesque Promenade, guiding ships through the Bay of Bengal and witnessing the city’s evolving history. Now, the iconic Old Lighthouse is ready to welcome visitors once again—this time not as a beacon for sailors, but as a beacon of culture and heritage. The refurbished 190-year-old lighthouse, one of Puducherry’s most recognisable landmarks, will be inaugurated by Union Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and opened to the public on June 25, 2026.The restoration marks the revival of a treasured monument that has stood at the heart of the former French colony since 1836.From Maritime Beacon to Cultural HubBuilt by the French, the 29-metre-tall structure was the first lighthouse on the Coromandel Coast and played a vital role in guiding vessels navigating the Bay of Bengal. It also served as a customs office during Puducherry’s flourishing maritime trade era. After years of wear and tear, the Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST) Commissionerate undertook a comprehensive restoration project, with civil works carried out by the Central Public Works Department under the guidance of INTACH. The result is a remarkable transformation. The historic structure has now been reimagined as a Cultural Heritage Centre, creating a unique space where history, art and community come together.Art, Books and a Taste of Franco-Tamil CultureVisitors stepping inside will discover far more than a restored monument. The ground floor features a documentary screening room that narrates the history of the department and the region. An art gallery will provide local artists and artisans a platform to showcase their creativity, while a library offers an extensive collection of books on local history in English, French, Tamil and Hindi.Adding to the experience is the newly introduced Douane Café, where visitors can savour Franco-Tamil cuisine inspired by Puducherry’s unique cultural identity. The project has been carefully designed to preserve the lighthouse's historic character while celebrating the city's rich blend of French and Tamil influences. The View Everyone Will Be Talking AboutPerhaps the most exciting attraction awaits at the very top. For the first time in years, visitors will be able to climb the lighthouse and enjoy sweeping panoramic views of Puducherry’s coastline, heritage quarter and bustling Promenade. The breathtaking vantage point is expected to become one of the city's biggest tourist draws.A Living Piece of HistoryThe Old Lighthouse forms part of a heritage ensemble that includes the Mairie, Customs House, old court building and French Consulate. It is among Puducherry’s protected heritage structures and remains a powerful reminder of the city’s maritime legacy.Nearly 190 years after it first illuminated the coast, the lighthouse is once again shining brightly—this time as a place where history is preserved, culture is celebrated and new memories are waiting to be made.
