The Heroes Next Door: Father and Son Turned Mattresses into Lifelines During Delhi Inferno
What began as an ordinary morning in Delhi’s Malviya Nagar quickly turned into a nightmare when a devastating fire broke out at Hotel Flourish Stay B&B. Thick smoke engulfed the five-storey building, trapping dozens of guests inside and forcing some to make an impossible choice—stay in the flames or jump from the windows. As panic spread and cries for help echoed through the neighbourhood, two local shopkeepers stepped forward without hesitation. Riyazuddin Mansuri and his son Armaan Mansuri, who run a modest mattress shop in the nearby Hauz Rani area, became unlikely heroes in one of the city’s most tragic incidents.Turning a Mattress Shop into a Rescue MissionFrom their shop, the father-son duo could see terrified guests leaning out of windows as the fire spread rapidly through the building. There was no time to think. Instead of watching helplessly, they emptied their store and rushed dozens of mattresses and quilts onto the street below. Within minutes, they had created a makeshift safety cushion for people who were preparing to jump from the upper floors. As survivors leapt from windows in a desperate attempt to escape, the mattresses softened their fall and gave them a chance at survival. According to Riyazuddin, at least eight lives were directly saved through this quick-thinking intervention. “I saved the lives of eight people by laying down mattresses from my shop on the road when I saw people jumping off the building,” he recalled. Witnesses said the duo’s actions helped several trapped guests escape what could have been certain death.‘At That Moment, I Was Only Thinking About Saving Lives’For Riyazuddin, the decision was instinctive. The mattresses represented his livelihood, but in that critical moment, their value was measured not in money but in human lives. He said that he was only thinking about saving lives, not the losses. His son Armaan remembered hearing desperate voices from the upper floors. He said people on the upper floors were shouting and asking if they should jump. Armaan immediately brought out around 20 to 25 quilts and mattresses from the shop and spread them outside the building. The rescue effort quickly became a community mission. Firefighters, local residents, and volunteers joined hands to pull survivors from the smoke-filled structure.Helping Even After the Flames Were OutThe Mansuris’ contribution did not end with the rescue. After the fire was brought under control, they provided bedsheets from their shop to help authorities carry injured victims and cover the bodies of those who had lost their lives.Their shop, once filled with mattresses and bedding, now stands largely empty. Some of the stock was damaged during the incident, and Riyazuddin remains uncertain about when he will be able to fully resume business. Yet despite the losses, there is little regret in his voice. For him, the opportunity to help others mattered far more than the cost.Riyazuddin believes his calm reaction during the emergency was partly influenced by his past experience as a civil defence volunteer nearly 15 years ago. That training helped him act quickly when every second counted. While emergency services arrived and rescued dozens more people, the actions of the father-son duo became a powerful example of how ordinary citizens can make an extraordinary difference during moments of crisis.A Reminder That Heroes Live Among UsThe Delhi hotel fire claimed 21 lives and left many families grieving. Amid the tragedy, however, emerged a story of courage, compassion, and selflessness. Riyazuddin and Armaan Mansuri did not wear uniforms or carry rescue equipment. They simply saw people in danger and used whatever they had to help.Their mattresses became lifelines. Their shop became a rescue station. And their actions became a reminder that heroism often comes from ordinary people who choose humanity over hesitation. In a moment defined by flames and loss, a father and son showed the world the power of compassion in action.
