At 57, Kerala High Court Judge Takes on Ironman Challenge and Finishes in Under 9 Hours!
Who says it's too late to take on a new challenge at 57? Kerala High Court judge Justice Bechu Kurian Thomas has proved otherwise by completing the gruelling Ironman 70.3 triathlon in Goa in eight hours, 46 minutes and 44 seconds.Balancing a demanding judicial career with months of intense training, the 57-year-old crossed the finish line in the men's 55–59 age category, achieving a personal milestone that is as inspiring as it is extraordinary.Three Challenges, One Determined JudgeThe Ironman 70.3 is no ordinary sporting event. Participants must complete three demanding disciplines: a 1.9-km swim, a 90-km cycling ride and a 21.1-km run.Justice Thomas first discovered the challenge two years ago when he watched his son participate in the Goa event. Seeing his son's preparation inspired him to consider taking on the race himself. He had always enjoyed sports, but years of demanding judicial work and sitting for 16–18 hours a day had taken a toll on his fitness. He decided it was time to get back in shape.Training Between Court HoursFor someone handling a demanding workload at the Kerala High Court, finding time for training was perhaps the biggest challenge. Justice Thomas began his preparation on April 21, shortly after his son's wedding. During his first swimming session, he could barely manage 50 metres. But he persisted, gradually building his stamina.Early mornings, late evenings and weekends became training hours. He reduced social engagements and even set up an indoor cycling arrangement to make the most of his limited time. He also made changes to his diet, losing 11 kg by bringing his weight down from 97 kg to 86 kg.As he told The Indian Express, he managed his schedule without leaving a single case pending in his court. When Injuries Tested His DeterminationThe journey was far from smooth. Justice Thomas had a history of knee injuries, a previous meniscus surgery and an Achilles tendon rupture. During preparation, he also suffered a calf muscle tear and a shoulder injury.Doctors advised him to rest, and just a week before the race, he even considered withdrawing. But he chose to give himself a chance. Recalling the philosophy that kept him going, he said, "If you want to attain your goal, you will have to overcome and embrace the pain, and not fight it."A Finish Line, and Another DreamJustice Thomas had initially hoped to finish in eight hours, 29 minutes and 59 seconds. Although he crossed the finish line a little later than planned, completing the race was his biggest achievement. And he is already thinking about returning to improve his timing! His journey sends out a powerful message: age, a busy schedule and setbacks need not always stand between us and our dreams. Sometimes, all it takes is the courage to begin.
