It was supposed to be a routine vehicle check. On September 27, Head Constable M. Velmurugan of the Kovilpalayam police station in Coimbatore was checking vehicles when an SUV caught the attention of the police. But when the officers attempted to stop it, the driver suddenly accelerated.In a matter of seconds, the routine check turned into a high-speed chase. Velmurugan did something extraordinary. He jumped onto the moving SUV and held tightly onto its roof rails, determined to prevent the suspects from getting away.Holding On for More Than 40 KilometresThe SUV sped away, but Velmurugan refused to let go. For more than 40 kilometres, the head constable remained clinging to the roof of the moving vehicle as police teams coordinated their efforts to stop it. The dramatic pursuit eventually ended near Avinashi in Tiruppur district, where coordinated police action helped intercept the SUV.The three occupants were arrested. According to reports, police identified them as three suspects from Rajasthan. Inside the vehicle, officers recovered around 231 kg of banned gutka, bringing the attempted smuggling operation to an end. What began as an ordinary roadside check had turned into a dangerous pursuit stretching across two districts.From the Road to the SecretariatNews of Velmurugan’s extraordinary act soon drew attention. On Tuesday, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay invited the head constable to the State Secretariat in Chennai and felicitated him for his efforts.The Chief Minister praised Velmurugan’s courage and quick thinking in preventing the suspects from escaping. He also advised the police officer to keep his own safety in mind while carrying out his duties. The recognition came after an incident in which Velmurugan’s determination played a key role in keeping the suspected smugglers from getting away.A Chase That Ended in ArrestsFrom a routine vehicle check to a 40-kilometre pursuit, the incident unfolded rapidly. Velmurugan held on. Police teams coordinated their response. The SUV was finally intercepted, three suspects were arrested and a large consignment of banned gutka was seized.For the Coimbatore head constable, it was a moment that put courage and quick thinking to the test.
