A Greener Ride Takes Shape as Assam Turns Local Bamboo Into Bicycles
On Gandhi Jayanti, Assam gave sustainable mobility a local twist. At an event in Guwahati, a bicycle with a frame made from locally sourced bamboo was formally launched, bringing together traditional natural resources and modern transportation. The initiative, undertaken by Pune-based Bamboo India Private Limited with support from the Assam government, aims to make bamboo bicycles a mainstream product rather than a niche or decorative item. The project involves an investment of around ₹15 crore and is planned at the Bamboo Park in Chhaygaon. The initial target is ambitious: 1,000 bicycles every month, with production potentially rising to 5,000 units a month in the future.More Than Just a BicycleThe project could also create opportunities beyond sustainable transportation.According to the plans, the initiative is expected to generate 50 to 100 direct employment opportunities in its first year. By developing manufacturing capacity within Assam, the project could also strengthen the use of locally sourced bamboo and add value to one of the state’s important natural resources.Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the bicycles would initially be displayed at parks across Guwahati so that people could experience them and provide feedback. If the response is encouraging, the government may consider expanding its support for the initiative and introducing bamboo bicycles more widely in public spaces and procurement. The project is not stopping with a single bicycle design. Bamboo India plans to manufacture single-gear, geared and battery-powered bicycles. Children's bicycles are also part of the plans. The company has also said that the bamboo frames are being developed under the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) category, with quality and safety certification from recognised institutions. Can Bamboo Become the New Ride?Bamboo has long been associated with Assam’s culture, crafts and rural economy. Turning it into bicycle frames gives the material an entirely new role in everyday mobility. The initiative also reflects a larger effort to explore alternatives that combine local resources, manufacturing and sustainability. With the first batch targeting 1,000 bicycles a month, Assam’s experiment is now ready to move from an interesting concept to something people can actually ride.If public feedback is positive and production scales up, these bamboo bicycles could become more than a Gandhi Jayanti launch, they could become a distinctive symbol of Assam’s push towards greener mobility.
