A Daring High-Seas Rescue! Indian Navy Frees 20 Crew Members from Armed Pirates
A fishing vessel seized by heavily armed pirates in the Arabian Sea has been safely recovered, thanks to a daring operation by the Indian Navy. In a remarkable display of coordination, naval personnel and the Indian Air Force worked together to rescue all 20 crew members of the vessel, Azini, more than 3,000 km from Mumbai. The 48-hour mission, completed on November 2, involved aerial surveillance, naval interception and the deployment of elite Marine Commandos. The best part? All 20 crew members were rescued safely, with no casualties or injuries reported.Tracking Down the Hijacked VesselThe trouble began when Azini was hijacked by an armed pirate group off the northeastern coast of Somalia in October. The incident raised serious concerns about maritime security, as the pirates could potentially use the fishing vessel as a 'mother ship' to launch further attacks on merchant ships passing through the region.Responding to the threat, the Indian Navy deployed a warship to locate and intercept the hijacked vessel, supported by a maritime reconnaissance aircraft. The naval and aerial platforms maintained continuous surveillance, tracked the vessel's movements and used carefully calibrated measures to restrict its movement and prevent it from escaping.Marine Commandos Join the MissionAs the operation progressed, the Indian Air Force stepped in to strengthen the rescue effort. In a precision aerial deployment, Marine Commandos were dropped from an IAF C-17 aircraft onto the vessel. The commandos, along with other naval personnel, moved in to secure the fishing boat, neutralise the pirate threat and free all 20 crew members. The coordinated mission brought together naval firepower, aerial surveillance and specialised combat skills to tackle a dangerous situation far out at sea.A Strong Message for Safe SeasDefence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated the Indian Navy for successfully completing the operation. He praised the seamless coordination with the Air Force and said the mission demonstrated India's ability and resolve to protect lives and uphold maritime security across the Indian Ocean Region. The successful rescue also highlights the importance of keeping international sea routes safe, particularly as piracy continues to pose risks to commercial shipping. With all 20 crew members safely out of danger and the vessel recovered, the operation stands as a reminder of the role India's defence forces play in protecting lives and responding to maritime threats, even thousands of kilometres from home.
