In a landmark moment celebrating women in sports, Indian cricketer Smriti Mandhana has been honoured with a one-of-a-kind Barbie doll, becoming the first Indian woman cricketer to receive this tribute. The recognition comes as part of Barbie’s “Dream Team” initiative launched ahead of International Women's Day, which celebrates inspiring female role models from around the world.
The customised doll reflects Mandhana in her cricket gear, symbolising her journey in a sport historically dominated by men. Through this initiative, Barbie aims to highlight women who have broken barriers and inspire young girls to dream beyond stereotypes.
On Tuesday, Mandhana rose to the top of the batting rankings with a rating of 790, overtaking South Africa captain Laura Wolvaardt after scoring 58 and 31 in the three-match ODI series against Australia.
Born in Mumbai and raised in Maharashtra, Mandhana made her international debut for India as a teenager and quickly established herself as one of the most elegant left-handed batters in the game. Her fearless stroke play and consistent performances have made her a pillar of the Indian team.
Over the years, she has delivered several memorable innings, including a powerful knock against Australia in the 2018 T20 World Cup. Her achievements also earned her the prestigious ICC Women's Cricketer of the Year, further cementing her status among the world’s best.
Mandhana’s recognition with a Barbie doll goes beyond sporting achievements. It represents the growing visibility of women in sports and the importance of representation. By honouring athletes like her, Barbie’s initiative seeks to encourage young girls to pursue careers in fields where women have traditionally been underrepresented.
As the world marks International Women’s Day, Mandhana’s journey from a young girl with a cricket bat to one of the most celebrated faces of women’s cricket stands as a powerful reminder that passion and perseverance can break barriers.
Her story continues to inspire a new generation of athletes who dare to dream big.
