The ancient ghats of Varanasi are used to spectacular sights—but this October, the action will move from the riverfront to the skies.

For the first time, the holy city will host a major air show over the river, bringing together more than three dozen aircraft for a three-day aerial spectacle. The performances are scheduled for October 22, 23 and 25, stretching from Namo Ghat to Assi Ghat.

With millions of spectators expected, the event is set to become a major visual spectacle for both residents and visitors.

Rafale, Tejas and Surya Kiran Take to the Sky

The aircraft line-up promises plenty of action. Among the highlights will be the Indian Air Force’s Rafale and Tejas fighter jets, along with Rudra helicopters, C-295 aircraft and Dakota aircraft. The much-loved Surya Kiran aerobatic team will also take to the skies, adding precision formations and high-speed manoeuvres to the show.

Performances will take place between noon and 2 pm, with each day’s programme expected to run for around 90 minutes. According to the Swarajyamag report, at any given time, three to five aircraft could be performing aerial manoeuvres above the river.

It will be a striking meeting of India’s modern aerospace capabilities with one of the country’s oldest and most iconic riverfronts.

Three Days of Aerial Action

The Indian Air Force is expected to begin preparations at Namo Ghat, which will serve as the main control centre, from October 16. Rehearsals are scheduled to begin on October 20 and continue through October 22 as teams prepare for the main performances. During the rehearsal period, the Rajghat Bridge and boat services on the Ganges are expected to remain closed for safety and operational reasons.

The scale of the event is reflected in the expected crowds, with officials estimating that more than 20 lakh people could gather across the riverfront to watch the spectacle.

Around 5,000 VIP guests from India and abroad are also expected to attend. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to attend the event as Chief Guest on the final day. 

A Grand Celebration Over the River

Managing such a massive gathering will require extensive coordination. Officials are working with neighbouring districts, including Chandauli, Ghazipur and Jaunpur, on crowd management and security arrangements. The final day is also expected to see the presence of senior dignitaries and military officials.

For Varanasi, this will be more than an air show. As Rafale fighters, Tejas jets and aerobatic teams streak across the sky above the Ganges, the ancient city will offer a spectacular setting for a celebration of India’s aviation prowess and aerial skill.
