India’s Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand have fought their way into the BWF World Championships semifinals, producing a remarkable comeback against fourth-seeded Chinese stars Jia Yifan and Zhang Shuxian.
The unseeded Indian duo battled for 69 minutes before turning the match around to win 16-21, 21-15, 21-13. The victory guarantees India at least a bronze medal in women’s doubles—and brings an extraordinary chapter to the pair’s comeback story.
The win is even more impressive given that Jia Yifan is a four-time World Champion and reigning Olympic champion, making the Indian victory all the more significant.
Treesa and Gayatri’s achievement has ended a long wait for Indian women’s doubles at the World Championships. The country’s last medal in the discipline came in 2011, when Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa won bronze in London.
Fifteen years later, another Indian pair has finally returned to the podium. And they did it by refusing to stay down. After losing the opening game, Treesa and Gayatri found another gear. Their attacking game became sharper, their smashes began landing with greater authority, and their work around the net grew increasingly precise.
The Chinese pair struggled to regain control as the Indians seized the momentum.
The World Championships medal carries an added layer of emotion because Treesa and Gayatri have had to overcome a difficult setback this year. Ahead of the Asia Badminton Championships and Uber Cup, Treesa suffered a serious ankle injury during training after accidentally stepping on Gayatri’s foot.
An MRI revealed two high-grade muscle tears and two ligament tears, forcing the 22-year-old into an extended rehabilitation programme. But the pair refused to let the setback define their season. They began rebuilding their campaign at the Indonesia Open, followed it with the US Open, and then won the Philippine International Challenge earlier this month. Now, their comeback has reached a spectacular new height.
Treesa and Gayatri have been knocking on the door of the biggest stages for years. They reached the All England Open semifinals in 2022 and 2023, won bronze at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, and broke into the world’s top 10 in early 2025.
Now they have something even bigger: a World Championships medal. For Indian badminton, it is a long-awaited return to the women’s doubles podium.
For Treesa and Gayatri, it is proof that sometimes the toughest comebacks can lead to the most unforgettable victories!
