It was a flight that should have been routine.
Flydubai flight FZ1073 had taken off from Dubai International Airport for Tel Aviv when chaos erupted inside the cockpit. According to reports, the co-pilot allegedly attacked and stabbed Captain Smit Machchhar, leaving the Indian pilot seriously injured. The exact circumstances and motive remain under investigation.
But what happened next is what has turned Machchhar into the central figure in a remarkable story of courage. Despite his injuries, the Indian captain is being credited with helping prevent the aircraft from becoming the scene of a devastating tragedy.
The situation became even more alarming when the aircraft rapidly lost altitude. Reuters reported that the Boeing 737 plunged nearly 14,000 feet in less than 30 seconds during the struggle. Emergency procedures were activated as the situation unfolded.
The aircraft was eventually diverted to Tabuk in Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely. Flydubai later confirmed that all passengers and crew were safe and accounted for, while urging people not to speculate about the incident before the investigation is complete.
Reports from passengers and officials say Machchhar, despite being badly injured, helped make it possible for others to intervene inside the cockpit. Some accounts say he managed to open the cockpit door, allowing cabin crew and passengers to enter and help subdue the attacker. The sequence of events is still being examined by authorities.
The captain was taken to hospital in Tabuk for treatment. Prime Minister Narendra Modi later praised Machchhar, calling him a “HERO” and saying his courage and resolve helped protect the lives of others. He also wished the captain a speedy recovery.
“His valour helped save hundreds of lives and avert a great tragedy,” Modi said in a post on X, while wishing Machchhar a speedy recovery.
The dramatic incident has raised questions about how the cockpit confrontation began and what led to the reported attack. Authorities in Saudi Arabia and other countries are investigating the circumstances. For now, however, the focus remains on those who helped bring the aircraft safely to the ground.
And at the centre of that story is Captain Smit Machchhar, an injured pilot who, in a moment of extraordinary danger, continued to act to protect the people entrusted to his care.
