Who knew a hula hoop could do so much more than spin around the waist? A group of young performers from Chennai has taken this simple circular hoop to extraordinary heights, winning six Guinness World Records titles during a special trip to London.
Members of the Chennai Hoopers academy travelled to the UK to attempt 10 records at the Guinness World Records headquarters on July 20. Under the watchful eye of official adjudicator Caitlin Hyem, the youngsters combined hula-hooping with gymnastics, flexibility, balance and coordination to pull off some remarkable feats.
Their challenges included spinning a hoop around the neck while holding the splits, rotating a hoop with the foot while maintaining a bridge position, and passing a hoop around the body using only the elbows while wearing inline skates.
Among the stars was Janani R S, who spun a hula hoop around her neck for 15 minutes and 14.56 seconds while holding the cross-splits position. The Times of India reported that she became the first record-holder in the female category for this feat. Janani also secured another title by completing 10 spider cartwheels in 30 seconds, a demanding move requiring flexibility and precise body control.
Vaishnavi Shree R added two more titles to the team’s tally. She completed 190 hula hoop rotations with her foot in one minute while holding a pelvic bridge position. She then performed 34 elbow passes in one minute while wearing inline skates, a challenge that demanded both balance and coordination.
Dhanvetha Praveen Kumar, who travelled from the UK, set a record in the under-16 category by completing 74 hula hoop rotations around her torso in 30 seconds while standing on one leg.
Not every attempt resulted in a new title. Some performers came close to breaking existing records but fell short by a few rotations. Yet their efforts demonstrated the determination required to compete at this level.
Chennai Hoopers was founded by Vijayalakshmi Saravana, who said the experience gave the children a valuable opportunity to showcase their skills before the official Guinness World Records team. Taking part in the adjudication process also helped them appreciate the discipline, precision and persistence needed to achieve a world record.
The academy had previously been recognised among the Young Achievers in Guinness World Records 2025. With six world records in the bag, these young Chennai stars have shown that when talent meets discipline and determination, even a simple hula hoop can take you places!
