For years, the skies above Purnea had planes, but none ever landed. Local residents would travel for hours to access air travel, often journeying to airports in Patna or other cities. That long wait is over. Today, Purnea Airport, a ₹34 crore project, officially opens its doors, marking a transformative moment for the city and the surrounding Seemanchal and Kosi regions. This airport is not just a facility; it is a symbol of progress, a bridge connecting local talent, farmers, students, and entrepreneurs to the rest of India and the world. For residents who once had to plan entire days just to catch a flight, the journey has now become a matter of minutes.
State-of-the-Art Infrastructure
Purnea Airport’s terminal spans 3,000 square meters, designed to handle modern passenger demands efficiently. Six check-in counters, a single conveyor belt, and a waiting area capable of accommodating 300 passengers at once ensure smooth operations. The airport also boasts the largest runway in the state, capable of handling a variety of domestic aircraft, ensuring safe and convenient landings and takeoffs. Beyond passenger convenience, the airport is expected to increase economic growth.
Connecting Seemanchal and Kosi to India’s Air Map
The regions of Seemanchal and Kosi, long considered remote in terms of aviation, are now firmly on India’s air map. This connectivity is more than a convenience; it is a lifeline. Students traveling for higher education, business owners expanding their enterprises, and patients seeking specialized medical care can now do so without enduring long and tiring road journeys.
Strategic Importance and Military Presence
Purnea Airport is also an Indian Air Force station, giving it strategic importance. The dual-use nature of the facility strengthens national security while supporting civilian operations. Such integration ensures that the airport is not only a hub for regional connectivity but also a key asset in the country’s defense infrastructure. The operational efficiency, safety, and strategic planning built into the airport reflect India’s broader push to enhance regional aviation and infrastructure. For the residents of Purnea, the airport is more than steel and concrete; it is a sign that the government is committed to including historically underrepresented regions in the national growth story.
PM Modi Inaugurates Bihar’s Gateway to the Skies
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Interim Terminal Building at the New Civil Enclave of Purnea Airport in Bihar’s Purnea district, making it the state’s fourth operational commercial airport after Patna, Gaya, and Darbhanga. The launch, part of a ₹36,000 crore development push, fulfills a long-pending demand for better air connectivity in northeastern Bihar.
The interim terminal will allow commercial operations to begin, with Star Air starting services on September 18. Flights will include four weekly trips to Ahmedabad and three to Kolkata under the RCS-UDAN scheme.
With Bihar’s largest runway, the airport is set to improve passenger handling capacity and strengthen economic ties across districts like Araria, Purnea, and Madhepura.
A New Beginning for Purnea
The inauguration of Purnea Airport is not just about flights it is about dreams taking off. The region’s long isolation from air travel is ending, and a new era of opportunity begins. With proper maintenance, expansion, and community engagement, Purnea Airport has the potential to transform the economic and social fabric of Seemanchal and Kosi. For a city and its people long waiting for a chance to connect with the rest of India and the world, this airport is more than infrastructure; it is a hope of progress, promise, and possibility.
