When disaster struck Venezuela, India wasted no time in extending a helping hand. India has launched 'Operation Amistad'—'Amistad' meaning friendship in Spanish—to provide urgent relief to the earthquake-hit South American nation.
Announcing the operation, External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar said two Indian Air Force C-17 Globemaster aircraft had taken off carrying critical humanitarian assistance to Venezuela.
The relief mission includes an Indian Army Field Hospital Unit, more than 35 tonnes of relief supplies, medicines and medical equipment, along with two BHISHM Cubes—advanced mobile medical units designed to provide rapid emergency healthcare during disasters.
The humanitarian mission comes after catastrophic earthquakes struck Venezuela, claiming more than 900 lives and leaving more than 4,300 people injured. As rescue operations continue, India has also deployed a 41-member rescue team to assist local authorities in relief and recovery efforts.
The combination of emergency medical infrastructure, trained personnel and essential relief materials is expected to strengthen on-ground response and provide immediate support to those affected by the disaster.
The operation follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi's message expressing deep sorrow over the tragedy. In a post on X, the Prime Minister conveyed condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.
"India stands ready to extend all possible assistance," he said, assuring Venezuela of the country's solidarity during the crisis. The gesture was warmly acknowledged by Venezuelan Acting President Delcy Rodriguez, who thanked Prime Minister Modi for his condolences and India's offer of assistance following the devastating earthquakes.
Operation Amistad is more than just a relief mission—it reflects India's humanitarian philosophy of standing with nations in times of need, regardless of geographical distance.
As the relief aircraft make their journey across continents, they carry not just aid but also a powerful message of compassion, solidarity and friendship.
