In a moment of immense pride for India, Professor Dr. Upasana Mahanta from Assam has been appointed to the Strategic Higher Education Advisory Council (SHEAC) formed by Cambridge International—making her the first Indian to ever join this prestigious global panel.
Dr. Mahanta, who currently serves as the Dean of Admissions and Outreach at O.P. Jindal Global University (JGU) in Sonipat, Haryana, hails from Sivasagar, Assam. Her appointment places her alongside distinguished academic leaders from world-renowned institutions such as MIT, Oxford, Cambridge, University of Toronto, and Monash University.
The SHEAC plays a crucial role in shaping the strategic direction of Cambridge qualifications worldwide. It ensures these qualifications remain relevant and responsive in today’s rapidly evolving higher education ecosystem.
With Dr. Mahanta now on the council, India’s voice—and that of the broader Global South—will be part of global conversations that influence education policy, equity, and innovation. Her selection is not only a personal achievement but a landmark for Indian education diplomacy, highlighting India's growing influence in international academia.
Reflecting on her appointment, Dr. Mahanta described it as “an incredible honour,” adding that she hopes to amplify the voices of students and educators from India and the Global South. In an era where global education is being reshaped by technology, climate concerns, and socio-economic change, she believes diverse, grounded, and globally aware perspectives are critical.
Her selection has been widely celebrated. Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu praised the achievement on X (formerly Twitter), stating:
“It’s truly heartening to see Professor Dr. Upasana Mahanta from Sivasagar becoming the first Indian to be appointed to SHEAC. A proud moment for Assam and the entire nation.”
Dr. Mahanta’s appointment is a recognition of India’s intellectual leadership and is proof of the rising prominence of Indian institutions and educators on global platforms. As higher education grapples with new paradigms—from AI-driven learning to inclusive policies—her presence ensures India’s experience and aspirations are included in global strategies.
