A story born in the mountains of Ladakh has found its way to one of the world's most prestigious student film honours.

Stanzin Jigmet, a young filmmaker from Ladakh, has won Gold in the Narrative category at the 53rd Student Academy Awards for his 14-minute film, The Dragon Letter. The achievement is particularly striking against the scale of this year's competition. The 2026 Student Academy Awards received 2,972 submissions from students representing 894 colleges and universities across the world.

Jigmet's film emerged at the top of the Narrative category, with Antoine Boulanger receiving Silver and Leon Korzyński's Kamathipura Express taking Bronze.

A Child, A Letter and a Quiet Struggle

The Dragon Letter follows Skarma, a shy 10-year-old boy studying at a strict boarding school in Ladakh. When he is asked to write a letter to his sponsor, Skarma finds himself struggling to put his thoughts into the prescribed format. While other children follow a ready-made template, his own response takes a more personal route.

Through this simple classroom assignment, the film explores childhood, self-expression and the courage to be oneself. The story draws from Jigmet's own experiences growing up in Ladakh, giving the film an intimate connection to the landscape and culture he knows firsthand.

Ladakh Meets the World

The Student Academy Awards ceremony was held in Toronto on September 14, bringing together emerging filmmakers from across the globe. For Jigmet, the recognition carried an especially personal meaning. Writing about the achievement, he reflected on the extraordinary journey of The Dragon Letter from Mulbekh, a remote village in Ladakh, to the Academy.

He dedicated the honour to his family, friends, cast, crew, ESCAC, Pixel Challenger Films and everyone who believed in the story. His journey also reflects years of filmmaking experience and training. Jigmet holds a Master's degree in Film Directing from ESCAC in Barcelona, Spain, and is the founder of Pixel Challenger Films, a Ladakh-based production house specialising in cinema-grade productions.

The Gold medal could be only the beginning. The winning Student Academy Award films are eligible for consideration in three short-film categories at the 99th Oscars—Animated Short Film, Live Action Short Film and Documentary Short Film.

From the quiet world of a Ladakhi boarding school to an international film platform, Jigmet's story has travelled a remarkable distance. And perhaps the film's journey carries the same message at its heart: where a story comes from does not determine how far it can travel.
