As the UAE ushered in a new era of rail travel with the launch of its first national mainline passenger service, an inspiring Indian success story was unfolding in the driver's cabin.
When the inaugural Etihad Rail passenger train departed from Fujairah towards Abu Dhabi on June 30, one of the people at the controls was 29-year-old Nishad from Kerala, who has become the first Indian Train Captain for Etihad Rail. His remarkable achievement has turned the landmark railway launch into a heartwarming moment for millions of Indians living and working in the Gulf.
Hailing from Alappuzha, Kerala, Nishad arrived in the UAE in 2014 in search of better opportunities. Like many expatriates chasing their dreams, he accepted every job that came his way. He worked as a cashier, sold perfumes, prepared hot dog sandwiches and even handled delivery jobs to make ends meet.
His breakthrough came in 2017 when he joined the Palm Jumeirah Monorail. That opportunity opened the doors to a railway career that saw him work with the Dubai Tram, Dubai Metro and later at Zayed International Airport.
Years of dedication eventually earned him one of the country's most prestigious railway roles. According to The Week, Nishad now joins Ibrahim Al Hammadi and Sara Al Mazrouei—the UAE's first national train captains—as part of the elite team operating Etihad Rail's passenger services.
While Nishad's achievement has captured hearts, the railway itself is reshaping transportation across the UAE.
According to Railway Gazette International, the newly launched passenger service initially connects Abu Dhabi and Fujairah, completing the journey in just 1 hour and 45 minutes. Trains travel at speeds of up to 200 km/h over the country's existing 900-km freight railway network.
The passenger network will continue expanding, with stations in Dubai and Al Dhaid scheduled to open on September 30, followed by Al Dhafra in December and Sharjah by March 2027. Passenger demand has already been impressive, with local reports indicating that more than 10,000 tickets were sold before services even began.
Etihad Rail's fleet includes 13 modern trains supplied by CAF and CRRC Qingdao Sifang. Built specifically for desert conditions, they can comfortably operate in temperatures reaching 55°C. Passengers can enjoy spacious seating, charging points, infotainment systems, air-conditioned coaches and onboard refreshments. Fares begin at 55 dirhams for Comfort Class and 120 dirhams for Premium. Officials believe the railway will strengthen connectivity between emirates while boosting tourism, business and sustainable transportation throughout the country.
The launch of Etihad Rail is more than just a transportation milestone, it is also a celebration of human ambition. As sleek trains race across the UAE's deserts, one young man from Kerala stands as proof that every difficult beginning can lead to extraordinary destinations.
Nishad's story reflects the dreams of countless Indians working abroad and serves as a powerful reminder that perseverance can transform ordinary lives into history-making journeys.
