In a grand celebration of India's rich cultural heritage, Jatin Goswami, a legendary figure in the world of Sattriya dance, has been conferred with the prestigious Padma Bhushan in 2025. A lifelong custodian of this classical dance form from Assam, Goswami’s legacy is deeply interwoven with the revival, preservation, and global recognition of Sattriya.
Born on August 2, 1933, Jatin Goswami trained under revered gurus and later founded his own dance academy, Alok Shilpi Sangha, becoming a key force in promoting Sattriya across India and the world. His dedication has earned him numerous accolades over the years, including the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and the Padma Shri in 2008.
Now, with the Padma Bhushan, Goswami’s unmatched contribution to Indian classical dance is once again being celebrated on a national platform—a tribute to a man whose life’s mission has been the nurturing of one of India’s oldest dance traditions.
The Significance of the Sattriya Art Form
Sattriya is one of the eight classical dance forms of India, rooted in the 15th-century Bhakti movement and originating from the Vaishnavite monasteries of Assam known as Sattras. It is a blend of devotion, storytelling, and grace—marked by intricate footwork, expressive hand gestures, and spiritual narratives.
Thanks to artists like Jatin Goswami, Sattriya has moved beyond monastery walls and into the global cultural consciousness. His work ensures that this sacred dance tradition is not only preserved but also continues to inspire future generations.
Jatin Goswami is not just a performer—he is the embodiment of Sattriya itself. As we celebrate his Padma Bhushan, we honour his lifetime of artistry, discipline, and cultural dedication.
