India has taken another significant step in strengthening its defence preparedness with the successful test-firing of the Agni-4 medium-range ballistic missile from the Integrated Test Range (ITR), Chandipur, Odisha.
Conducted under the aegis of the Strategic Forces Command (SFC), the test validated the missile's operational readiness and confirmed that all technical and operational parameters performed as expected. The successful test makes India's defence stronger and highlights the country's growing ability to develop advanced missiles on its own.
The Ministry of Defence confirmed that the launch met all mission objectives, marking yet another milestone in India's long-standing missile development programme.
The Agni-4 is an indigenously developed, two-stage, solid-fuel ballistic missile capable of carrying both conventional and nuclear payloads.
With a strike range of approximately 4,000 kilometres, the missile can reach strategic targets over vast distances,making it an important part of India's defence system. Equipped with advanced navigation, guidance and control systems, Agni-4 is designed to deliver exceptional accuracy while maintaining high reliability under operational conditions. Its sophisticated thrust vector control technology further enhances stability and precision during flight.
Already inducted into the Strategic Forces Command, the missile serves as a vital pillar of India's strategic defence architecture.
The Agni missile series represents decades of indigenous research and development by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
As per a report in The Economic times, work on the Agni-4 programme began in 2007, with the upgraded missile emerging from the Agni-II Prime project developed by DRDO's Advanced Missile Laboratory in Hyderabad. Compared to its predecessor, Agni-4 features a larger first-stage motor, an improved second-stage propulsion system, upgraded electronic components and significantly enhanced guidance technology. These improvements have resulted in greater range, improved accuracy and enhanced mission reliability.
Since its maiden developmental trials, the missile has undergone multiple successful flight test and has showed consistent performance under varied operational conditions.
One of its landmark tests took place in 2014, when it successfully travelled nearly 4,000 kilometres, reaching an altitude of around 850 kilometres before accurately splashing down in the Indian Ocean. The latest successful launch further validates the missile's operational capabilities and readiness for deployment.
The successful Agni-4 test comes at a time when India continues to modernise its defence capabilities through indigenous technologies under the broader vision of self-reliance in defence manufacturing.
