On Wednesday, India test-fired its indigenously developed supersonic interceptor missile successfully. This new missile is capable of destroying any incoming ballistic missile at low altitude.
A defense official explained that this test launch was conducted to validate various parameters of interceptor in flight mode. He also added that it was a low altitude trial.
It is also a part of an effort to have a multi-layer missile defense system.
The target missile was launched from Chandipur at around 10.10 am. After around 5 minutes, the Advanced Air Defence (AAD) missile, which was positioned at Abdul Kalam Islande in Bay of Bengal got the signals from tracking radars. AAD was then launched to destroy the incoming hostile missile in mid-air.
Officials informed that the mission was excellent.
More than three thousand people staying within 2.5 km were shifted temporarily after discussing safety measures with the defence officials. It ensured a safe launch of the missile. The fishermen from coastal districts of Bhadrak, Kendrapada and Balasore were asked not to enter the sea during the time of the test launch.
