In a powerful tribute to India’s healthcare warriors, President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday conferred the prestigious National Florence Nightingale Awards 2026 on 15 outstanding nursing professionals for their extraordinary service to public healthcare.
Among the distinguished awardees was Maj Gen Lissamma P V, a proud daughter of Kerala whose journey from Kollam district to one of the highest ranks in military nursing has now earned national recognition.
The award ceremony was held at the majestic Rashtrapati Bhavan in the presence of Union Health Minister J P Nadda. The award recognized nursing professionals for their unwavering dedication, compassionate service, and remarkable contribution to strengthening India’s healthcare system.
Maj Gen Lissamma P V’s achievement has sparked pride across Kerala and the armed forces community.
Hailing from Kollam district, she began her journey as a student at the School of Nursing, Military Hospital, Jalandhar. After being commissioned into the Military Nursing Service in 1986, she steadily rose through the ranks with years of disciplined service and leadership.
Alongside her demanding nursing responsibilities, she pursued higher education and earned degrees in arts and law, along with a master’s degree in hospital administration. Over the years, she handled several key appointments within the military healthcare system, building a reputation for professionalism, leadership, and dedication to patient care.
On May 1, 2025, she assumed the prestigious appointment of Additional Director General of the Military Nursing Service, marking another milestone in her remarkable career.
The recognition drew praise from across the defence establishment, with the Indian Air Force congratulating Maj Gen Lissamma P V through a special message on social media.
The Air Force described her service, leadership, and commitment to military healthcare as an inspiration to generations serving in uniform.
The tribute also highlighted the growing role of women leaders in India’s armed forces and healthcare services, celebrating her achievement as a shining example of dedication and excellence. Her recognition comes at a time when healthcare professionals continue to be celebrated for their tireless contribution to society, especially after years in which nurses stood on the frontlines during some of the country’s toughest public health challenges.
During the ceremony, President Murmu praised nurses and healthcare workers for their silent yet invaluable contribution to the nation.
She described the occasion as a fitting tribute to nursing personnel who serve society with compassion, resilience, and unwavering commitment.
Union Health Minister J P Nadda also honoured nurses on the occasion of International Nurses Day, acknowledging their dedication and sacrifice in strengthening India’s healthcare system.
The National Florence Nightingale Awards remain among the country’s highest honours for nursing professionals. Named after the legendary British nurse Florence Nightingale, the award recognizes those who have made exceptional contributions in healthcare, patient service, administration, and community welfare.
