In a moment that filled an entire region with pride and the nation with gratitude, Lieutenant Commander Suraj Parashar of the Indian Navy was conferred the prestigious Shaurya Chakra by President Droupadi Murmu at the Defence Investiture Ceremony 2026 held at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
The award, one of India's highest peacetime gallantry honours, recognized his extraordinary bravery, leadership, and unwavering commitment to duty during a high-risk counter-terrorism operation in Jammu and Kashmir.
The Defence Investiture Ceremony 2026 (Phase-I) brought together some of the country's finest heroes whose actions have safeguarded lives and strengthened national security. The ceremony was attended by Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, as President Murmu presented gallantry awards to personnel from the Armed Forces, Central Armed Police Forces, and other security agencies.
The honours reflected the immense courage displayed by India's security forces in combating terrorism, insurgency, and hostile threats across the country. Among the awardees, Lieutenant Commander Suraj Parashar's story stood out as a powerful example of bravery under extreme pressure.
Originally from Chadhatgarh village in Himachal Pradesh's Una district and currently residing in Nangal, Suraj Parashar was part of a joint military operation conducted in Jammu and Kashmir on November 6, 2024. Security forces had launched a cordon-and-search operation after receiving intelligence about terrorists hiding inside a house.
As the operation unfolded, the situation quickly became dangerous. One terrorist attempted to break through the security cordon and escape while engaging troops with gunfire. In those critical moments, Lieutenant Commander Parashar displayed remarkable presence of mind and courage. He not only engaged the terrorists but also relayed vital information to fellow personnel. His leadership and swift decision-making proved crucial in ensuring the operation's success.
The encounter eventually resulted in the elimination of both terrorists and the successful completion of the mission.
News of the award sparked celebrations across Una and neighbouring regions. Residents described the recognition as a proud moment not only for the district but for the entire state of Himachal Pradesh. As Lt. Cdr. Parashar received the Shaurya Chakra from the President of India, it was not just an individual being honoured. It was a tribute to every soldier, sailor, and officer who stands ready to protect the nation, often at great personal risk.
