The Indian men’s hockey team has added another golden chapter to its illustrious journey, clinching a record sixth Asian Champions Trophy title with a commanding 4-1 victory over Japan in the final at the Olympian Balbir Singh Senior International Hockey Stadium in Mohali.
The triumph also marks India's third consecutive title, following their victories in 2023 and 2024. The hosts completed the tournament unbeaten, winning all seven matches and giving the home crowd plenty to cheer about. With this victory, India further strengthened its position as the most successful team in the history of the competition.
The final began with Japan catching India off guard. Kazumasa Matsumoto found the back of the net with a backhand shot in the third minute, giving Japan an early lead. The visitors defended their advantage through the first half, keeping the Indian attack at bay. However, the hosts returned with renewed energy after the break.
India finally found the equaliser in the 42nd minute when Shilanand Lakra converted a penalty corner variation involving captain Harmanpreet Singh. The momentum then shifted decisively in India's favour. Dilpreet Singh scored in the 47th minute to put India ahead. Jugraj Singh followed with a powerful drag-flick in the 52nd minute, extending the lead to 3-1. Just a minute later, Vivek Sagar Prasad struck again to seal a memorable 4-1 victory.
Reflecting on the win, captain Harmanpreet Singh credited the team's patience, composure and commitment to its game plan. He emphasised that the players remained focused throughout the match, regardless of the scoreline, and made their chances count in the final quarter.
Forward Mandeep Singh also expressed happiness over winning consecutive titles. He thanked the supporters who filled the stadium, noting the special atmosphere created by the large home crowd in Punjab.
Former India women's hockey captain Rani Rampal, who attended the final and medal ceremony, highlighted the importance of hosting an international tournament in Punjab, a state that has contributed numerous players to Indian hockey. She also appreciated the presence of young fans and players' families in the stands.
India's previous Asian Champions Trophy titles came in 2011, 2016, 2018 (shared), 2023 and 2024. Japan finished runners-up for the third time, having also lost the finals in 2013 and 2021. Earlier, Malaysia secured the bronze medal with a 5-2 victory over South Korea.
With six titles, three consecutive championships and an unbeaten campaign, India's latest triumph is another proud moment for Indian hockey.
