Indian hockey has witnessed a historic moment. Veteran midfielder Manpreet Singh created history on Wednesday by becoming the most-capped player in Indian men’s hockey, making his 413th international appearance during India’s FIH Pro League 2025-26 clash against Germany in Rotterdam.
With this milestone, the 33-year-old surpassed former India captain and current Hockey India President Dilip Tirkey, who represented the country in 412 matches during his illustrious career. Manpreet’s achievement places him among the greatest names in world hockey and cements his legacy as one of India’s finest ever players.
The landmark appearance elevated Manpreet to fifth place on the all-time list of men’s international hockey appearances. Belgium’s John-John Dohmen tops the charts with 481 caps, followed by the Netherlands legend Teun de Nooijer (453), Australia’s Eddie Ockenden (451), and Great Britain’s Barry Middleton (432).
According to a report in Hockey India, Manpreet is currently the only active men’s international hockey player to have crossed the 400-cap mark.
Hailing from Mithapur in Jalandhar, Punjab, Manpreet made his senior debut for India in 2011 and quickly emerged as the heartbeat of the team. Renowned for his fitness, tireless work ethic and leadership, he played a pivotal role in reviving Indian hockey on the world stage.
Under his captaincy, India ended a 41-year Olympic medal drought by winning bronze at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. He also played a crucial role in securing another bronze medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics, making India a back-to-back Olympic medallist.
His trophy cabinet also includes gold medals at the 2014 and 2022 Asian Games, Asia Cup titles in 2017 and 2025, and multiple Asian Champions Trophy triumphs.
Recognising his contribution to Indian sports, Manpreet received the Arjuna Award in 2018 and the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna in 2021.
Reflecting on his achievement, Manpreet expressed gratitude towards his teammates and family. He said that it was a very proud moment for him to have played so many matches for India. He further said that representing the country has always been the biggest honour of his life. He dedicated the milestone to his teammates, family, wife, children and especially his mother and brothers, who stood by him throughout his journey.
Despite achieving what many considered an untouchable record, the midfield maestro remains hungry for success. “The World Cup and the dream of winning Olympic gold continue to inspire me every day,” he said.
To celebrate the historic feat, Hockey India announced a cash reward of ₹10 lakh for the star playmaker. Congratulating Manpreet, Hockey India President Dr. Dilip Tirkey called the feat “an extraordinary accomplishment” that reflects his dedication, consistency and passion for the game.
With 413 appearances and counting, Manpreet Singh has not just broken a record. he has built a legacy that future generations of Indian hockey players will aspire to emulate.
