Indian cycling has reached an exciting new milestone. Harshita Jakhar, a 19-year-old cyclist from Rajasthan, has become the first Indian woman to feature at the Tour de France Femmes, one of the world's most prestigious women's cycling events.

The young rider took part in the ceremonial start of Stage 2 in Switzerland, leading a group of eight promising cyclists selected by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI). Riding alongside cyclists from Afghanistan, Algeria, Chile, Ethiopia, Namibia and Uganda, Harshita proudly carried India's colours onto one of cycling's biggest stages.

Though the ride covered a 4.5-kilometre neutralised section of the course, its significance extended far beyond the distance. It marked a breakthrough moment for Indian women's cycling and opened the door for many more aspiring riders to dream bigger.

A Childhood Dream Comes True

For Harshita, this was much more than a ceremonial ride. She revealed that her love for cycling began in childhood, inspired by her father. Ever since then, the Tour de France had remained one of her biggest dreams.

Selected by the UCI for this special opportunity, Harshita described the experience as a dream come true and expressed her gratitude for riding alongside talented cyclists from different parts of the world. Adding to the occasion, UCI President David Lappartient welcomed the riders on the start podium and expressed his delight at seeing an Indian cyclist among the international group.

From Rajasthan to the World Stage

Harshita's remarkable rise has been built on years of discipline and determination. Hailing from Rajasthan, she has dominated the junior cycling circuit, winning numerous national titles before making a seamless transition to the senior ranks.

She currently trains at the Sports Authority of India's National Centre of Excellence in Patiala under the guidance of her father, Rakesh Jakhar, a former Commonwealth Games cyclist whose experience has played a crucial role in shaping her career.

Eyes Firmly Set on Bigger Goals

Despite this remarkable achievement, Harshita believes her journey has only just begun. Her immediate target is a top-10 finish at the 2026 Asian Games, while her ultimate dream is to win a medal for India at the 2030 Asian Games.

Her appearance at the Tour de France Femmes is a powerful reminder that Indian athletes are steadily breaking barriers in sports once considered beyond their reach. As Harshita Jakhar rode alongside some of the world's brightest young cyclists, she wasn't just representing herself, she was carrying the hopes of a new generation of Indian riders eager to make their mark on global roads.
