India's medal campaign at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow reached a thrilling milestone as Saikhom Mirabai Chanu clinched the country's first gold medal of the Games. The Olympic silver medallist once again showcased her class in the women's 48kg weightlifting event, producing a dominant performance.
The gold not only gave India its first top-podium finish in Glasgow but also marked another remarkable chapter in Mirabai's illustrious career. Having previously won Commonwealth Games gold in Gold Coast 2018 and Birmingham 2022, she has now successfully defended her title making it three consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medals across three editions.
Mirabai's campaign began with an unsuccessful opening attempt, but champions are defined by how they respond under pressure. The Manipuri weightlifter quickly regained her rhythm, setting a new Commonwealth Games record of 85kg in the snatch. She then followed it up with a confident 105kg lift in the clean and jerk, finishing with a combined total of 190kg to comfortably secure the gold medal.
With this victory, Mirabai's overall Commonwealth Games medal tally now stands at four, adding yet another milestone to a career that already includes an Olympic silver medal and multiple world championship honours.
Mirabai's gold was the highlight of India's most successful day at the Games so far, but she was not the only weightlifter to step onto the podium.
In the men's 60kg category, Rishikanta Singh Chanambam delivered an impressive performance to claim the silver medal. The 28-year-old matched the Commonwealth Games snatch record with a lift of 121kg before finishing with a total of 264kg.
Another silver followed in the men's 65kg event, where Raja Muthupandi produced an inspiring comeback performance. The Tamil Nadu lifter registered 126kg in the snatch and 160kg in the clean and jerk, finishing with a combined lift of 286kg.
For Muthupandi, the silver carried special significance, marking a return to the Commonwealth Games podium after injuries forced him to miss the previous edition.
India's success extended beyond the weightlifting arena. In boxing, Jadumani Singh advanced to the quarter-finals after a commanding victory over Pakistan's Sumama Rehman, while Preeti Pawar progressed with a stoppage win. Meanwhile, India's men's 4x200m freestyle relay team also impressed by qualifying for and competing in the Commonwealth Games final.
With one gold and two silver medals on Day 4, Team India enjoyed its strongest outing of the competition so far.
As the Games continue in Glasgow, Mirabai Chanu's victory has provided the perfect boost for the Indian contingent. Her latest triumph is not just another medal—it is the moment that opened India's gold account at the 2026 Commonwealth Games and inspired the nation to dream of many more podium finishes in the days ahead.
