Dr. Shailaja Donempudi, a renowned scientist from Hydrerabad, has shattered the glass ceiling at the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) by becoming the first woman to be appointed as a Distinguished Scientist (DS) in the organization's eight-decade history. Dr. Donempudi's academic journey began with her postgraduate studies at the University of Hyderabad, where she earned her MSc and M.Phil degrees. She then pursued her Ph.D. in Polymer Chemistry from Osmania University, laying the foundation for a remarkable career in scientific research.
A Career Spanning Over 28 Years
Dr. Donempudi's association with the CSIR-Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (CSIR-IICT) began in 1993, after completing her Ph.D. Over the past 28 years, she has made significant contributions to the fields of polymer synthesis, characterization, and technology development. Her expertise and dedication have earned her recognition within the scientific community. In 1996, Dr. Donempudi received the prestigious CSIR-DAAD Fellowship, which enabled her to pursue advanced research at the University of Kiel in Germany. This international exposure further honed her research skills and broadened her perspectives. Her research excellence has led to numerous accolades, including three technology team awards for successfully transferring research outcomes to industries.
Leadership Roles and Collaborations
Dr. Donempudi has served as the Chair of Business Development and Research Management at CSIR-IICT since 2017. In this role, she has played a leading part in building collaborations and fostering partnerships between academia and industry. Her efforts have demonstrated a strong link between laboratory work and real-world applications. Dr. Donempudi's appointment as a Distinguished Scientist (DS) marks a historic milestone in CSIR's history.
As the first woman to hold this position, she will head the Business Development Group (BDG) at CSIR Headquarters in New Delhi.
