The e-waste Eco Park, spanning 11.4 acres, will be a state-of-the-art facility capable of processing up to 51,000 metric tonnes of e-waste annually, covering all 106 categories outlined in the E-Waste Management Rules, 2022. This innovative project aims to revolutionize how India deals with electronic waste, turning a significant challenge into an opportunity for sustainable growth.
The Need for E-Waste Management
India stands as the third-largest producer of e-waste in the world, generating over 1.6 million metric tonnes each year. Delhi contributes nearly 9.5% of this staggering total. Unfortunately, only 17.4% of global e-waste is recycled in a scientifically sound manner, resulting in the loss of valuable resources like copper, lithium, and rare earth metals. The e-waste Eco Park will help bridge this gap, ensuring responsible waste management and recycling practices.
Key Features of the E-Waste Eco Park
The E-Waste Eco Park is envisioned as an initiative in sustainable waste management, offering a comprehensive and integrated recycling infrastructure. The facility will house end-to-end solutions, including collection, dismantling, refurbishment, and scientific metal recovery, ensuring efficient and environmentally responsible processing of electronic waste . The park will manage all 106 categories of e-waste, covering everything from everyday electronics like phones and laptops to larger and more complex items such as industrial machinery and solar equipment.
Structured under a Green Investment Model, the project is being developed through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) with a 15-year concession period and an initial investment of ₹150 crore. This sustainable financial approach encourages innovation while sharing risks and rewards between stakeholders. Economically, the park is projected to generate ₹350 crore in revenue and create thousands of green jobs. By empowering local dismantlers, recyclers, and refurbishers, the initiative aims to build a circular economy while promoting environmental stewardship and community development
A Step Towards a Circular Economy
The e-waste Eco Park is proof of Delhi's dedication to a circular economy, where every resource counts and every worker matters. By promoting safe and scientific recovery of essential materials, Delhi is paving the way for a cleaner, greener, and more inclusive industrial landscape. The park will also serve as a model for similar initiatives across the country, driving sustainable growth and environmental sustainability.
Implementation and Timeline
The Delhi State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (DSIIDC) will issue a global RFQ-cum-RFP tender to attract top-notch green technology providers. The construction of the Eco Park is expected to wrap up within 18 months, after which it will manage nearly 25% of Delhi's e-waste. As Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa said, "The days of careless dumping are behind us. We're focused on making Delhi ready for the future industrially, environmentally, and socially."
