Public parks are meant to be spaces where people can relax, exercise and reconnect with nature. But for many women, concerns over safety often overshadow the joy of spending time outdoors. Now, Dehradun is preparing to change that narrative with an ambitious new initiative.

According to online reports, Uttarakhand's capital is set to develop the state's first-ever Pink Park—a women-only public space designed to provide a secure, welcoming and empowering environment for women of all ages. The project reflects a growing effort across India to rethink urban spaces through the lens of safety.

A Park Designed Exclusively for Women

The upcoming Pink Park will be open exclusively to women and children up to the age of 10. More than just another green space, it is envisioned as a sanctuary where women can take a peaceful walk, read a book, work out, or simply spend quality time with friends without worrying about their safety.

The Dehradun Municipal Corporation has reportedly begun identifying a suitable location for the project. Construction is expected to commence once the land is finalised. The Pink Park promises to offer much more than landscaped gardens and walking paths.

Among its standout attractions will be a Pink Library, offering a quiet reading space where visitors can relax with books in a serene atmosphere. For fitness enthusiasts, an open-air gym will encourage healthy lifestyles, while a dedicated gaming zone featuring indoor recreational activities such as table tennis and carrom will provide opportunities for leisure and social interaction.

The park will also include walking tracks, children's play areas and essential public amenities, making it a complete recreational destination.

Safety at the Heart of the Project

What truly sets the Pink Park apart is its focus on creating a secure environment. According to reports, the facility will be staffed entirely by women—from security personnel to gardeners and maintenance staff. This unique approach aims to make visitors feel more comfortable while promoting women's employment in public service roles.

Clean public toilets and other visitor-friendly facilities are also expected to be part of the infrastructure, ensuring convenience alongside safety.

Part of a Growing National Movement

Dehradun is not alone in embracing this concept. Chennai recently announced plans to establish its own women-only Pink Park in Tambaram, featuring modern outdoor fitness equipment, landscaped gardens, children's play zones and disability-friendly infrastructure.

The Chennai project is also expected to incorporate round-the-clock CCTV surveillance linked to the city's control centre, along with regular police patrols—highlighting a broader national push towards safer public spaces for women.

For Dehradun, Uttarakhand's first Pink Park is more than an infrastructure project. It represents a meaningful step toward creating cities where women can enjoy the outdoors with confidence, comfort and peace of mind. If successfully implemented, it could inspire many more states to transform public spaces into places where safety and freedom go hand in hand.
