India have done it again!
In a high-pressure Asian Games T20 cricket final, India defeated Pakistan by 19 runs at Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin on Saturday to claim the men’s cricket gold medal. After winning the toss, captain Shreyas Iyer chose to bat first on a tricky, two-paced pitch. India’s decision paid off as they posted a formidable 211, setting Pakistan a daunting chase.
The victory also delivered India their 19th gold medal of the ongoing Asian Games.
India’s innings did not get off to a perfect start, with Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Sanju Samson departing early during the Powerplay. But Abhishek Sharma had other plans.
The left-hander unleashed a spectacular attack, sending the ball soaring over the boundary again and again. His blazing 61 off just 28 balls, including three fours and seven sixes, gave India the explosive start they needed. His innings turned the momentum firmly in India’s favour.
There was a brief wobble in the middle order when Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer fell within six deliveries. But just when India needed another push, Tilak Varma stepped up.
Tilak transformed the closing stages of the innings with a breathtaking cameo. The vice-captain raced to his half-century in just 21 balls, smashing three fours and four sixes. His fearless hitting ensured India crossed the 200-run mark despite the challenging surface.
With 211 on the board, India had a huge target to defend. But Pakistan were not going down quietly.
Pakistan began their chase cautiously, but Hazan Nawaz soon changed the mood. The batter launched a stunning counterattack, racing to a rapid half-century and briefly threatening to turn the final around. India found themselves under pressure, particularly as Ravi Bishnoi conceded 44 runs in his three overs.
With Pakistan needing 44 runs from the final two overs, the match was suddenly alive. Then came the decisive blow.
Jasprit Bumrah’s last over dramatically tightened India’s grip, leaving Pakistan needing 33 runs from the final over. The target proved too steep on the difficult surface. India held their nerve, completing a memorable 19-run victory.
The triumph marks India’s second successive Asian Games cricket gold, following the women’s team’s successful defence of their title from Hangzhou 2023.
It also extended India’s winning record against Pakistan in T20 internationals, with this victory marking their seventh successive win since 2021 and 15th victory in 18 meetings since 2007.
From Abhishek’s explosive start to Tilak’s finishing fireworks and a composed bowling effort, India produced a golden performance when it mattered most.
