Under the floodlights of Bhubaneswar, with a roaring home crowd behind them and history within reach, Kalinga Lancers showed nerves of steel to reclaim the Hockey India League crown. The Kalinga Hockey Stadium in Bhubaneswar witnessed a night to remember on Monday as Odisha-based Vedanta Kalinga Lancers edged past Ranchi Royals 3–2 in a gripping final to lift the Men’s Hockey India League (HIL) 2025–26 title. In front of a passionate home crowd, the Lancers held their nerve in a high-quality contest, showcasing composure, defensive solidity, and clinical finishing when it mattered most. The victory marked Kalinga Lancers’ second HIL title and underlined their return to the summit after years of fluctuating fortunes in the league.
Both teams entered the final with confidence and intent, pressing high from the opening whistle and creating early circle penetrations. The Lancers struck first in the fourth minute after earning consecutive penalty corners. Belgian drag-flick specialist Alexander Hendrickx stepped up and fired a powerful effort past Ranchi Royals goalkeeper Suraj Karkera, sending the home fans into celebration. Ranchi Royals responded with equal determination. In the ninth minute, Yashdeep Siwach delivered a clever aerial pass from the left flank, which Araijeet Singh Hundal controlled brilliantly before smashing home a fierce shot to level the score. The goal reflected Ranchi’s attacking quality and set the tone for an end-to-end contest.
The second quarter proved crucial as Kalinga Lancers seized control through their strength at penalty corners. In the 25th minute, Hendrickx’s drag-flick was initially saved, but Dilpreet Singh reacted quickest to slot home the rebound from close range. Just two minutes later, Hendrickx struck again, unleashing a thunderous drag-flick into the top right corner to give the Lancers a 3–1 lead at halftime. Ranchi Royals refused to fade away. They dominated possession in the third quarter and pressed relentlessly. Captain Tom Boon’s penalty-corner effort was blocked by the first rusher, while Araijeet Hundal was denied by a superb save from goalkeeper Krishan Bahadur Pathak, who was beginning to emerge as a key figure in the final.
The final quarter tested the Lancers’ resolve. Ranchi Royals threw everything forward, creating chance after chance. Pathak produced a series of outstanding saves to deny Sam Lane, Boon, and Nilam Sanjeep Xess, keeping Kalinga’s slim advantage intact. Boon finally pulled one back from a penalty corner in the 59th minute, setting up a tense finish. But the Lancers stayed calm, defended deep, and managed the final moments with maturity to seal a memorable victory at home. Kalinga Lancers’ title win was no accident. Their campaign was defined by consistency and clarity. They finished at the top of the league standings before winning Qualifier 1 and the final, delivering under pressure at every decisive stage. Defensive discipline formed the backbone of their success. The Lancers conceded just 11 goals across the tournament, the best defensive record in the league. Their penalty-corner execution was equally impressive, finishing with the highest conversion rate at 31.8 percent. Hendrickx led the scoring charts for the franchise with 12 goals from nine matches, repeatedly delivering in crucial moments.
Captain Arthur Van Doren reflected on the challenge of building a championship-winning team in a short time. “Four weeks to build a bond and shape a team is extremely challenging,” he said. “But we created a solid unit, and that showed on the pitch.” Head coach Jay Stacy highlighted the importance of adaptability and trust. The Hockey India League announced a total prize purse of ₹6 crore. Champions Kalinga Lancers received ₹3 crore, while runners-up Ranchi Royals took home ₹2 crore. Hyderabad Toofans, who finished third after defeating HIL GC earlier in the day, were awarded ₹1 crore. Among individual awards, Tamil Nadu Dragons goalkeeper Prince Deep Singh was named Best Goalkeeper of the Tournament, while Talem Priyobarta of HIL GC won the Upcoming Player award. Ranchi Royals captain Tom Boon finished as the tournament’s top scorer with 19 goals.
The Hockey India League continues to be a vital platform for Indian hockey, blending international stars with domestic talent and raising the sport’s profile nationwide. Kalinga Lancers’ triumph reflects not just tactical excellence, but the power of unity, patience, and belief. For the players, fans, and the city of Bhubaneswar, this victory is more than a trophy; it is a celebration of resilience, teamwork, and the enduring spirit of Indian hockey.
