Royal Challengers Bengaluru etched their names into Indian Premier League folklore on Sunday night, becoming only the third franchise in IPL history to successfully defend their title. In a thrilling IPL 2026 final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, RCB defeated Gujarat Titans by five wickets, powered by a vintage Virat Kohli special and a disciplined bowling display.
With this triumph, RCB joined the elite company of Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings as the only teams to defend an IPL crown successfully. And fittingly, it was Virat Kohli, the face of Bengaluru cricket for over a decade, who stood tall when it mattered the most.
After being asked to bowl first, RCB’s attack delivered under pressure with clinical precision. Gujarat Titans never truly found momentum as wickets fell regularly and scoring dried up during the middle overs.
The Titans had an early escape when Sai Sudharsan survived a caught-behind appeal via DRS in the opening over, but the relief didn’t last long. Captain Shubman Gill departed in the third over after being caught brilliantly by Rajat Patidar off Josh Hazlewood’s bowling. Moments later, Bhuvneshwar Kumar struck to remove Sudharsan and leave GT rattled inside the powerplay.
Rasikh Salam continued his breakthrough season by dismissing Sindhu, while Krunal Pandya and wicketkeeper Jitesh Sharma combined to remove Buttler with a sharp stumping. At 73/4, Gujarat was staring at collapse.
Washington Sundar then played a fighting knock under pressure, crafting a composed unbeaten 50 off 37 balls to push GT past the 150-run mark. However, the lack of support from the other end meant the 2022 champions finished with a below-par 155/8.
Chasing 156 in a final is never straightforward, but RCB approached the target with fearless intent. Virat Kohli and Venkatesh Iyer exploded from the very beginning, taking on Kagiso Rabada, the Purple Cap frontrunner, with astonishing aggression. Iyer smashed a rapid 32 off just 16 deliveries before Mohammed Siraj struck back for Gujarat. Rabada then removed Devdutt Padikkal to give GT some hope.
That hope grew stronger when Rashid Khan delivered a game-changing spell in the middle overs, dismissing Rajat Patidar and Krunal Pandya within four balls. Suddenly, RCB were reduced to 91/4, and the pressure shifted dramatically.
But this was Virat Kohli’s night. Displaying calmness, authority, and unmatched experience, Kohli anchored the chase beautifully while keeping the scoreboard moving. The Indian superstar brought up his half-century in just 25 balls, his fastest-ever IPL fifty.
With only a few runs needed, Kohli launched a towering six over long-on in the final ball of the 18th over to seal the title in style. The unbeaten 75 off 42 balls was a captain-like statement from the veteran, who once again proved why he remains one of the greatest players in T20 cricket history.
RCB’s first IPL title last season was emotional. This one was authoritative. Defending a championship in a tournament as competitive as the IPL is one of the toughest tasks in franchise cricket. Yet Bengaluru answered every challenge this season with composure and consistency. The RCB side looked balanced and fearless throughout the campaign.
Their successful title defence signals a shift in IPL power dynamics. RCB are no longer just fan favourites chasing a dream, they are now a champion side building an era. And at the centre of it all stands Virat Kohli, lifting another trophy and reminding the cricketing world that greatness is not just about winning once; it is about sustaining excellence.
Brief Scores: Gujarat Titans 155/8 in 20 overs lost to Royal Challengers Bengaluru 161/5 in 18 overs.
