Some stories begin slowly, but some begin at full throttle. Atiqa Mir’s journey is one of speed, passion, and fearless ambition. At an age when most children are still exploring their interests, Atiqa is already racing on international tracks, competing against the best young drivers in the world. Her recent achievement of becoming the highest-ranked female driver in the FIA International Karting Rankings is not just a personal milestone; it is a proud moment for India and a sign of a changing future in motorsport.
Born in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, Atiqa’s journey began far away from the racing circuits of Europe and the Middle East. Her early life was rooted in a place known more for its natural beauty than motorsport. But destiny had a different track planned for her. After moving to Dubai at a young age, Atiqa was introduced to karting. What started as a fun activity soon turned into a serious pursuit. Behind her stood a strong pillar of support, her father, Asif Nazir Mir, a former national karting champion. With his guidance, Atiqa began competitive karting at just six years old, stepping into a world that would soon recognize her talent.
It did not take long for Atiqa to make her mark. In the 2022–23 season, she finished as the vice-champion in the UAE IAME National Karting Championship in the Mini R category. Competing against experienced young racers, she displayed maturity, skill, and consistency far beyond her years. These early victories were not just about winning races, they were about building confidence and proving that she belonged on the track. Each race became a stepping stone, each lap a lesson, shaping her into a stronger and smarter racer.
Atiqa’s journey soon expanded beyond regional competitions to international arenas. In 2024, she became the first Indian female driver to qualify for the finals of the Rotax Euro Trophy in South Garda, Italy. It was a historic moment that put her on the global map. Later that year, she achieved something even more remarkable. At the Rotax Max Challenge International Trophy in Le Mans, France, she won a race in the Micro Max category, becoming the first female racer to achieve this feat in the series. This victory was not just about speed, it was about breaking stereotypes and redefining what young girls can achieve in motorsport.
With success came greater opportunities. In 2025, Atiqa joined the Babyrace Driver Academy in Italy, one of the most competitive training grounds for young racers. Competing in the WSK Karting Series, she faced some of the toughest competition in junior motorsport. She was also selected as the only Asian driver for the Iron Dames Young Talent programme, an initiative dedicated to promoting women in racing. These platforms not only refined her skills but also prepared her for the challenges of professional motorsport.
A defining moment in Atiqa’s journey came when she was selected for the Formula 1 Academy’s Discover Your Drive programme. This global initiative aims to identify and nurture young female racers and guide them toward the highest levels of the sport. Being the only Asian and one of the youngest drivers selected, Atiqa’s inclusion speaks volumes about her potential. Soon after, she was signed by AKCEL GP, a UAE-based karting team associated with the academy, further strengthening her path toward professional racing.
At just 11, Atiqa Mir has already achieved what many aspire to. Yet, her journey is only beginning. The road ahead will be challenging, filled with intense competition and high expectations. But if her story so far is any indication, she has the talent, determination, and mindset to go far. As she continues to rise, one thing is certain: she is not just racing against time, she is racing toward history, carrying India’s hopes with her on every lap.
