"Dream, Dream, Dream! Conduct these dreams into thoughts, and then transform them into action."

India’s strength is not only measured by its borders or its weapons but also by the courage of the people who stand silently protecting it. Among these protectors, the Central Reserve Police Force stands as a symbol of resilience, sacrifice, and unwavering duty. Every year on April 9, CRPF Valour Day is observed not just as a ritual but as a reminder of a story that defines what true bravery looks like.
The roots of Valour Day take us back to 1965, to the harsh and unforgiving terrain of the Rann of Kutch. At a remote location known as Sardar Post, a small group of around 150 CRPF personnel faced an unexpected and massive attack from Pakistani forces. The enemy was stronger in numbers, better equipped, and strategically prepared. The Indian side, on the other hand, was caught off guard. But what followed was not defeat; it was defiance. Under immense pressure, CRPF jawans displayed extraordinary courage and tactical intelligence. Despite being outnumbered, they held their ground and repelled not one but three consecutive attacks. In the fierce exchange, 34 enemy soldiers were neutralised and four were captured alive. However, victory came at a cost. Six brave CRPF personnel laid down their lives, etching their sacrifice into the nation’s memory forever.
That moment was historic for another reason. It marked the first time a police force directly engaged and defeated regular military troops in such a combat situation. It redefined the role of paramilitary forces in India and established the CRPF as a formidable force capable of handling not just law and order, but also high-intensity conflict. One name that stands out from that battle is Bhavana Ram, whose leadership and courage played a crucial role in defending Sardar Post. His actions, along with those of his fellow soldiers, became the foundation of a legacy that continues to inspire generations.
CRPF Valour Day is not just about remembering the past; it is about carrying that spirit into the present. Over the years, CRPF has been at the forefront of India’s internal security, tackling terrorism, insurgency, naxalism, and civil unrest. From protecting Parliament during the 2001 terror attack to maintaining peace during crises, the force has consistently proven its versatility and commitment. The significance of this day lies in honouring not only the fallen heroes of 1965 but also the thousands who have since followed in their footsteps. With over 2,000 supreme sacrifices and thousands of gallantry medals, CRPF continues to uphold its motto—Service and Loyalty—with unmatched dedication.
The observance of Valour Day is marked by solemn ceremonies and heartfelt tributes. At the National Police Memorial, senior officials including Director General Sujoy Lal Thaosen pay homage to the martyrs by laying wreaths. The ceremonies continue at the Shaurya CRPF Officers Institute, where gallantry medal recipients are honoured and families of fallen heroes are remembered. One of the most touching aspects of the event is the presence of veterans like Kishan Singh, whose firsthand accounts of the battle bring history alive. Their stories are not just tales of war but lessons in courage, resilience, and duty.
Carrying the Legacy Forward
Today’s CRPF continues to draw inspiration from the heroes of Sardar Post. Whether it is counter-insurgency operations in remote regions or disaster response during emergencies, the force remains at the frontline, adapting to modern challenges while staying rooted in its core values. The story of Valour Day is not just about a single battle. It is about a mindset—a refusal to give up, a commitment to duty, and a belief that even in the face of overwhelming odds, courage can change the outcome.
In a fast-moving world where news changes every second, stories like these risk being forgotten. But they shouldn’t be. Because they define who we are as a nation. CRPF Valour Day is not just a date on the calendar. It is a reminder that India’s strength lies in the bravery of those who choose duty over comfort, courage over fear, and sacrifice over self. And perhaps that is what truly makes CRPF different.
