A remarkable comeback has brought Alexia Putellas back to the pinnacle of women’s football! The Spanish midfielder has won her third Women’s Ballon d’Or, matching compatriot Aitana Bonmati’s record and adding another milestone to her illustrious career.
The award was presented at the 70th Ballon d’Or ceremony at the London Palladium on October 26, 2026. Putellas, who first won the honour in 2021 and 2022, reclaimed the prestigious title after three years in which Bonmati dominated the award.
Putellas had an outstanding 2025–26 season, playing a key role in Barcelona’s successful campaign. She scored 21 goals and provided 13 assists across all competitions, recording 34 goal contributions. Barcelona lifted four major trophies during the season: Liga F, the Copa de la Reina, the Spanish Super Cup and the UEFA Women’s Champions League.
Her influence was particularly evident in Europe. In 11 Champions League appearances, Putellas scored seven goals and provided seven assists. Her performances earned her the competition’s Player of the Season award.
Barcelona also produced a commanding display in the Champions League final in Oslo in May 2026, defeating OL Lyonnes 4–0 to claim the title.
Putellas’ third Ballon d’Or places her alongside Bonmati as the only players to have won the women’s award three times. Putellas claimed consecutive honours in 2021 and 2022, before Bonmati won three in a row from 2023 to 2025.
Their achievements highlight Spain’s remarkable influence on women’s football in recent years. Barcelona, meanwhile, has continued to be a major force in the sport, with its players collecting six of the eight Women’s Ballon d’Or awards presented between 2018 and 2026.
Putellas’ success also reflects her importance beyond the scoresheet. Her passing, creativity and ability to control the midfield have made her a key figure in Barcelona’s rise to the top of European football.
After her early Ballon d’Or triumphs, Putellas faced injury setbacks while Bonmati emerged as a dominant force. Her return to the top in 2026 marks a significant achievement in a career defined by resilience and excellence. Ahead of the 2026–27 season, Putellas also began a new chapter, joining Women’s Super League club London City Lionesses after 14 years at Barcelona.
Her third Ballon d’Or is more than another individual accolade. It celebrates a season of outstanding performances and a return to the summit of the women’s game.
