Ahmedabad has turned environmental action into a world record.
In an extraordinary display of community spirit and commitment to sustainability, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has entered the Guinness World Records by planting an astonishing 3.61 lakh saplings in just one hour. The record-breaking plantation drive, carried out at Bhadaj using the Miyawaki afforestation method, has become one of India's most remarkable environmental achievements.
What made the feat even more inspiring was the scale of public participation. More than 25,000 volunteers came together with a shared goal, to create a greener future for generations to come.
The massive plantation campaign covered nearly 76,000 square metres, where volunteers planted 35 species of indigenous trees in a carefully planned effort to enhance Ahmedabad's urban ecosystem. Unlike conventional plantation drives, the Miyawaki method focuses on creating dense, self-sustaining forests using native species that grow rapidly, improve biodiversity, absorb more carbon dioxide and create healthier urban environments.
Every sapling planted represented far more than a number on a record sheet, it symbolised a collective commitment to protecting nature and combating climate change.
The success of the campaign was driven by an incredible partnership between government agencies, civic authorities and citizens. According to ANI, volunteers from BAPS, the National Cadet Corps (NCC), educational institutions, NGOs, social organisations, police personnel, CREDAI members, school boards and thousands of residents worked shoulder to shoulder to accomplish the record-breaking feat.
The event was organised in the presence of Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah, who represents the Gandhinagar Lok Sabha constituency. It was also attended by Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi, senior ministers, civic officials and community leaders.
Congratulating the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation and the thousands of volunteers, Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi described the achievement as "a record rooted in responsibility." In a message shared on social media, he praised the collective effort that transformed a shared vision into a historic accomplishment, adding that every sapling planted today is a promise of a greener tomorrow.
The record-setting plantation drive forms part of a larger programme to plant 1.25 crore trees across the Gandhinagar Lok Sabha constituency, with 50 lakh saplings planned within Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation limits alone.
By expanding urban green cover through native species, the city aims to strengthen biodiversity, improve air quality, reduce heat island effects and build healthier public spaces for future generations.
While the Guinness World Record is a remarkable achievement, Ahmedabad's greatest success lies in proving that environmental conservation is most effective when entire communities come together. In just one hour, thousands of people transformed an open landscape into the beginning of a thriving urban forest.
As cities around the world search for sustainable solutions to climate challenges, Ahmedabad's green milestone stands as a powerful reminder that extraordinary change begins with ordinary citizens planting a single sapling—together.
