For Indian cueist Aditya Mehta, the Commonwealth Cue Sports Championships 2026 brought more than a sporting triumph. It gave him a chance to fulfil a heartfelt wish for someone who has brought new joy into his life.
Mehta clinched gold in men’s snooker in Ahmedabad, defeating compatriot Dhvaj Haria 3–0 in the final. But the victory held a special place in his heart as it was his first gold medal since becoming a father. He dedicated the achievement to his little daughter, whom he lovingly calls his “Special One”.
According to ANI, Mehta had entered the tournament hoping to win an international title for his daughter. With the gold medal now in his hands, that dream became a beautiful reality.
The journey to the top was not without challenges. Mehta revealed that he had come close to defeat on two occasions during the tournament but managed to fight his way through. Fatherhood, he said, had brought a new energy into his home and given him fresh motivation. Despite having less time to train than before, he felt his match play and consistency had improved over the past year.
In the final, Mehta made the most of his scoring opportunities to seal a straight-frames victory. While Haria impressed with some remarkable long pots, Mehta converted his chances into frame-winning breaks.
His approach remained simple: stay focused, minimise unforced errors and concentrate on what he could control. That steady mindset helped him deliver when it mattered most.
The Ahmedabad triumph was another important milestone in Mehta’s international career. Although he had previously won silver at the Asian Championship in Indore in 2011, this was his first international title on Indian soil.
As reported by ANI, he expressed gratitude to the organisers for hosting the championships and creating an atmosphere worthy of the occasion. The event brought together 144 players from 42 Commonwealth nations across five cue sports disciplines.
India also enjoyed an impressive campaign, finishing at the top of the medal table with 13 medals — three gold, five silver and five bronze. Anupama Ramachandran and Rayaan Razmi also won gold in women’s and men’s English billiards, respectively.
Mehta is already looking ahead to upcoming international competitions, including the Asian Indoor Games, the World 6-Red Championship and the Asian Team Championship. He hopes to continue winning medals for India—and for his little girl.
For now, his Commonwealth gold stands as a reminder that sometimes, the most powerful motivation comes from the smallest hands we hold. His “Special One” may be too young to understand the achievement today, but this golden memory will always have a story of love behind it.
