In a ceremony dedicated to honouring India's bravest heroes, it was a quiet moment of humanity that captured the nation's heart.
At the Defence Investiture Ceremony 2026 held at Rashtrapati Bhavan, President Droupadi Murmu presented gallantry awards to members of the Armed Forces who displayed extraordinary courage in the service of the nation. Yet, amid the medals, salutes, and solemn tributes, a deeply emotional interaction between the President and the mothers of two fallen soldiers became one of the most talked-about moments of the event.
As the mothers of Lt. Shashank Tiwari and Sepoy Janjal Pravin Prabhakar stepped forward to receive the posthumous Kirti Chakra awarded to their sons, grief overwhelmed them. What followed was a gesture that transcended protocol and touched millions across the country.
The atmosphere inside Rashtrapati Bhavan was one of pride and remembrance. Families of gallantry award recipients gathered to witness the nation honour their loved ones' sacrifices. As Lt. Shashank Tiwari's mother approached the stage to receive her son's Kirti Chakra, emotions became difficult to contain. The weight of loss was evident as she struggled through the moment.
Seeing her grief, President Murmu rose from her chair and walked towards her. Holding her hand gently, the President offered comfort and wiped away her tears. A similar gesture followed when the mother of Sepoy Janjal Pravin Prabhakar received the honour on behalf of her son.
The touching scenes quickly spread across social media, where many described the President's actions as a powerful display of empathy and respect for the families who have paid the ultimate price for the nation.
Behind the emotional ceremony was the story of a young officer whose final act embodied selflessness. On May 22, 2025, Lt. Shashank Tiwari was leading a route-opening patrol and snow-clearance operation in a challenging mountainous region. During the mission, Agniveer Stephan Subba lost his footing while crossing a bridge over a fast-flowing mountain stream and was swept away by the powerful current.
Without hesitation, Lt. Tiwari jumped into the freezing waters to save his fellow soldier. Another soldier, Naik Pukar Katel, immediately joined the rescue effort.Together, they succeeded in bringing Agniveer Subba to safety. However, while ensuring his comrade's survival, Lt. Tiwari himself was swept away by the raging waters.
Despite extensive rescue efforts, he could not be saved. For his exceptional bravery, selfless camaraderie, and supreme sacrifice, Lt. Tiwari was posthumously awarded the Kirti Chakra, India's second-highest peacetime gallantry award.
The ceremony also honoured Sepoy Janjal Pravin Prabhakar of The Mahar Regiment and 1st Battalion Rashtriya Rifles. During a cordon-and-search operation in Jammu and Kashmir's Anantnag district, he displayed remarkable courage while confronting terrorists attempting to escape.
Despite grave danger, he alerted fellow soldiers, repositioned himself strategically, and successfully prevented the terrorists from breaking through the security cordon. His actions led to the neutralisation of two heavily armed terrorists. In the process, he made the supreme sacrifice while upholding the highest traditions of the Indian Army.
For his courage beyond the call of duty, he too was posthumously awarded the Kirti Chakra.
Gallantry awards honour acts of exceptional courage, but behind every medal is a family that carries both pride and loss. President Murmu's compassionate gesture served as a reminder that while the nation celebrates its heroes, it also shares in the grief of those who loved them most.
For a few brief moments, the ceremony was not just about medals and citations. It became a powerful expression of gratitude, empathy, and respect. As the images continue to resonate across the country, they remind Indians that the sacrifices of soldiers are never borne by them alone. Their families walk that journey too. And sometimes, a comforting hand and a few silent tears can say what words never could.
